Dave Chappelle Wins Fourth Consecutive Grammy for “Best Comedy Album”

Dave Chappelle has yet to lose in the category for any of his Netflix stand-up specials.

The Grammy for “Best Comedy Album” has once again gone to Dave Chappelle.

The comedian claimed his fourth consecutive victory in the category on Sunday night at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards for his latest Netflix stand-up special, The Closer. The special was released in October of 2021 as the deal-closing title with the streamer, who has exclusively hosted his comedy specials since 2016.

In order to be eligible for Grammy contention, each of his specials have been batched and released as albums on DSPs. And he’s yet to lose in the category. An instantly polarizing and controversial special, The Closer came under fire for jokes made at the expense of the Trans community. Activists and advocacy organizations called for the special’s removal from Netflix and employees at the company staged a walkout when Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos backed the comedian and refused to pull it from their platform.

The comedian has addressed to the backlash to The Closer on several occasions in the year since it premiered. Recently, Chappelle responded to the cancellation of a show at Minneapolis’ First Avenue on an episode of his podcast, The Midnight Miracle. “Now I have a belief that the gay community is not monolithic, and I think that in regards to me, that there’s probably a variety of opinions throughout that,” Chappelle said. “But there’s a thing they do where they deliberately obscure what I think they believe is the intent of my work to make a moment of it that I don’t know that the work necessarily merits. You know what I mean?” the comedian added.

The comedian has not indicated whether he will renew his deal with Netflix for his next specials, but their brands remain entwined. Chappelle hosted the inaugural installment of the Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival in Los Angeles last summer.
