Cypress Hill is Turning Their Origin Story Into a Graphic Novel

Cypress Hill: Tres Equis will arrive in August via Z2 Comics.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album, Cypress Hill is releasing a graphic novel that explains how the group came to be. According to Rolling Stone, the book will drop in August via Z2 Comics. Copies will be printed in English and Spanish, and come with a copy of the album pressed on green vinyl with all-new cover art. Pre-order a copy today at Z2 Comics.

"Before they became icons, Louis and Senen were just a couple of teenage cholos from around the way, trying to stay out of trouble," reads a press release. "Until a series of chance encounters with both sides of the law changed their path forever."

Noah Callahan-Bever and Gabriel Alvarez wrote the novel. World-renowned Los Angeles artist Mister Cartoon designed the cover. A team made up of Felix Ruiz, Jefte Palo, Juan Gedeon, Damion Scott, Angel Hernandez and Paris Alleyne provided the artwork.

"Working with Noah and Gabriel was great," B-Real added. "They took our stories and brought them to life in a unique way that is dark and humorous, which was very much the vibe we going on at the time of the first album. Felix, Jefte, Juan, Damian, and Paris have been absolutely killin' it! It's amazing to see the pieces come together."

The group formed in 1988 and dropped their debut album in 1991. The album sold two million copies in America alone. In 1993, they dropped their sophomore effort Black Sunday. The album went triple platinum, earning Cypress Hill the highest Soundscan for a rap group at that time.

"Just the idea of doing a Cypress Hill-based graphic novel in itself was exciting to me," B-Real said. "The possiblities of telling the stories in this form are basically limitless and [the comic] can go anywhere we wanted to take it."
