‘Colin in Black and White’ Will Detail the Origin Story of Colin Kaepernick [Trailer]

Colin in Black and White will showcase the early life of Colin Kaepernick. The series is being helmed by Ava DuVernay and will premiere on Netflix in October.

Netflix has released the first trailer for Colin in Black and White, a new limited series that will tell the story of Colin Kaepernick’s come up.

The series will be six 30 minute episodes and will make its debut on Netflix on October 29. The story is produced and helmed by Kaepernick himself alongside Ava DuVernay.

Colin in Black and White will detail Kaepernick’s childhood years, from his time as a Black football prospect in a majority white neighborhood, to his professional career, to his transition as an activist.

The show will star Jaden Michael, who will play a young Kaepernick, Mary-Louise Parker, and a clean-shaven Nick Offerman.

This story was first announced early last year. At the time, DuVernay released a statement talking about why she wanted to capture this story:

“With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally... Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports, and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”

In his own statement, Kapernick talked about why this series is an expansion on his activism over the last five years.

“Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens... We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”

In 2016, Kapernick, who, at the time, was a QB for the San Francisco 49ers, started kneeling during the national anthem to protest police shootings. He continued his protest throughout the season. He eventually left the 49ers and hasn't played an NFL minute since. Kapernick and teammate Eric Reid sued the NFL in 2017 and then he settled with the league in 2019.
