Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson Try to Outwit A 'Jigsaw Copycat' in 'Saw: Spiral'

Chris Rock executive produced the latest chapter in the Saw series.

Two comedic legends are teaming up for Lionsgate and Twisted Films' Spiral: Fromthe Book of Saw. Chris Rock executive produces and stars alongside Samuel L. Jackson in the film, due out May 14th. Rock plays Detective Ezekiel Banks, who has just been delivered a mysterious package. The package contains a USB drive bearing Jigsaw's signature spiral and instructions to "Play me."

"Hello Detective Banks," a familiar voice greets him. "Do you know where your officers are?"

The rest of the precinct is left to wonder if the Jigsaw killer is back from the dead. Detective Banks reaches out to his father, played by Jackson. The elder Banks believes the voice is a Jigsaw copycat, and warns that the situation is "gonna go sideways fast."

Rock released a statement to IndieWire in 2020 about reviving the franchise. The last chapter in the saga came in 2017 with Jigsaw, the eighth movie. The franchise's director Darren Lynn Bousman returns for the new chapter as well. The movie will feature original music by 21 Savage and Slaughter Gang, including the new single "Spiral."

"I've been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004," Rock said in a statement. "I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”

Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake cited Eddie Murphy's fresh take on buddy-cop dramas in 48 Hours as Rock's inspiration for the project. "When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” Drake said.

The movie will arrive on May 14th, 2021.
