Check Out This ‘Masters of the Universe’ Toy Set Designed By Virgil Abloh

Collector platform Mattel Creations is releasing their Masters of the Universe toy set this month, designed by Virgil Abloh prior to his death.

Mattel is giving Masters of the Universe an upgrade courtesy of the late Virgil Abloh. Mattel’s collector platform has revealed their MOTU collaboration with Abloh, who passed during the toy set’s creation, which was ultimately completed by London-based design agency Alaska Alaska. In the set are four monochromatic figurines in different shades of nude and standing at 7 inches tall, each reimagined by Abloh and modeled after notable MOTU characters He-Man, Skeletor, Battle Cat, and Skele-god.

All four figures are accompanied with accessories like swappable hands and battle weapons for display purposes. Also included with each figure is a comic book and art print by illustrator Reggie Know.

“Virgil had a deep interest in the MOTU property, in which aspects of his interest were rooted in nostalgia. The selection of characters for this offering we believe to be rooted in their iconography and significance within the franchise,” said Alaska Alaska in a statement. “The design direction looked to preserve the existing iconography, using color theory as a point of entry into novelty, and collector’s culture, drawing a parallel between art collectors and comic book collectors.”

Last week, BBC premiered new Cassie Quarless-directed documentary Virgil Abloh: How To Be Both, exploring how the late designer conquered the fashion industry and became artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton.

The Masters of the Universe c/o Virgil Abloh™ figures will be released exclusively online on Friday, October 21.
