The film was initially slated for an October 16th release.

It appears that no matter how many times you say Candyman, the film will no longer be arriving next month. Or at any point this year, for that matter.

According to director Nia DaCosta, the theatrical release of the highly-anticipated horror film remake has been pushed back to 2021. DaCosta announced the delay in a tweet this morning (see below,) citing her desire for audiences to experience the film collectively and as a community. "We made CANDYMAN to be seen in theaters. Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories--how they shape each other, how they shape us. It’s about the collective experience of trauma and joy, suffering and triumph, and the stories we tell around it," DaCosta wrote in a prior tweet, responding to calls for a VOD release of the film.

With the delay, Candyman joins an ever-expanding list of film and TV releases being postponed, in some cases, indefinitely. Earlier this week, FX announced production on the third and foruth seasons of Atlanta had come to a halt as a coronavirus precaution. Elsewhere, filming for The Batman, Matt Reeves' take on the caped crusader, was similarly forced to shut down in response to Robert Pattinson testing positive for the virus. The director is now shooting for an October 1, 2021 release, as opposed to the initial June 25th, 2021 drop.
