‘Candyman’ Director Nia DaCosta Shares A Thrilling Animated Prologue

After delays, the movie finally arrives on September 20.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the highly-anticipated Candyman remake was pushed back to September. On Wednesday, however, director Nia DaCosta shared an animated prologue to Twitter. Watch the full video below.

Along with the video, DaCosta shared a thrilling introductory statement to foreground the tone of the preview.

“CANDYMAN,” she wrote, “at the intersection of white violence and black pain, is about unwilling martyrs. The people they were, the symbols we turn them into, the monsters we are told they must have been.”

Manual Cinema provided the shadow puppetry animation, while musician Lichens provided the haunting score. “There’ll be much more where that came from in the film,” DaCosta tweeted.

The video condenses three short, intertwined stories into a two-and-a-half minute video. The video possibly offers a look into the origins of the titular character. One character is a factory worker, depicted offering candy to children, then being chased and brutally beaten by a group of police officers.

Another montage shows a child riding his bike. He’s accused of a crime, ostracized, incarcerated, and eventually sentenced to the electric chair. The stories in the prologue revolve around a faceless artist. Collider‘s Allie Gemmill noted that the story teases Candyman‘s origins. The titular villain was born into slavery, eventually becoming an artist.

The new Candyman stars Teyonah Parris, Watchmen‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Selma‘s Colman Domingo and Four Weddings and a Funeral‘s Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. Jordan Peele executive produced the film.

Nia DaCosta’s Candyman remake hits theaters on September 20.
