Seems Like the Long-Awaited Boondocks Reboot Will Now Be Coming in 2022

The first official Boondocks NFTs are currently on sale.

According to the official Boondocks Instagram page, the beloved animated series will be returning in 2022. The page's bio has also revealed that the first official Boondocks NFTs are on sale in collaboration with the artist Seung Kim, the current executive producer/director of the show.

HBO Max acquired rights to The Boondocks reboot back in 2019, but the project has been delayed on multiple occasions. HBO reportedly is asking for two 12-episode seasons. Aaron McGruder will return as show runner.

"There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” McGruder said at the time of the deal. “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun."

Kevin Reilly, the Chief Content Officer of HBO Max, TBS, TNT, and truTV, spoke glowingly about McGruder's artistic vision.

The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like ‘The Trial of Robert Kelly’, ‘The Fundraiser’ and ‘The Story of Gangstalicious. Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice," Reilly said, "and we are elated The Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max.”

Stay tuned for further updates on the forthcoming reboot.
