‘Black Panther’ Director Ryan Coogler Pens Heartfelt Letter Thanking Fans For Historic Success
Blown away by the overwhelming response to Black Panther, director Ryan Coogler shared a personal letter thanking all of the film’s supporters.
Black Panther smashed expectations, the box office and the alt-right’s collective faces all at the same damn time. Pulling in a whopping $242 million at the box office in the United States, being hailed as a positive reflection of African life in Africa, and challenging the “long-held false Hollywood beliefs” of black stereotypes are just a few of the accolades that have befallen Black Panther.
Add to the mix the near-unanimous positive reviews from critics, and we here at OKP are just hoping that come the next awards season, Black Panther gets its just due. Blown away by the responses, the film’s director Ryan Coogler shared a personal letter to everyone who supported, dressed up for and danced in the theater lobbies for Black Panther on Tuesday evening. The emotional note begins by explaining, “I am struggling to find the words to express my gratitude at this moment, but I will try.”
Coogler focuses on that Black Panther was a group effort and said later in the letter, “Deep down we all hoped that people would come to see a film about a fictional country on the continent of Africa, made up of a cast of people of African descent.”
