Eilish's quote left many Twitter users confused.

After a monumental 2018, pop music's new princess Billie Eilish became a household name following the 62nd Grammy Awards. Eilish won five Grammy Awards for her debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Eilish recently covered the March 2020 Vogue issue. In the accompanying interview, however, her comments about songwriting in rap have ruffled feathers.

The profile's author mentions that Eilish's peers--like Tyler, the Creator, and Lana Del Ray--have created "dark alter egos" to enhance their songwriting. Eilish noted that this was an artistic choice, unlike what occurs in hip-hop.

"Just because the story isn't real doesn't mean it can't be important," she said. "There's a difference between lying in a song and writing a story. There are tons of songs where people are just lying. There's a lot of that in rap right now, from people that I know who rap. It's like 'I got my AK-47 and I'm fuckin',' and I'm like, what? You don't have a gun. 'And all my bitches...' I'm like, which bitches? That's posturing, and that's not what I'm doing."

Understandably, rap fans on social media didn't take the comments well. Many pointed out Eilish's adjacency to rising rap stars. As Genius noted, Eilish previously collaborated with JID and Denzel Curry, and is on record citing JID and Isaiah Rashad as musical influences. Others recounted the long, storied history of white pop stars' shaky takes on hip-hop.
