Big Sean Announces His Fifth Studio Album, ‘Detroit 2’

The new Big Sean album will be released September 4th.

It’s been a quiet last few years for Big Sean. Back in 2019, the Detroit MC stepped away from the music business to focus on his mental health. As a result, he hasn’t released an album in over three years. On Monday however, he announced his return with Detroit 2. Stream the album announcement below.

“Detroit, to me it’s home,” he said. “It’s more than just a city, you know. It’s a mentality. What’s crazy is, the things I thought would destroy me, came full circle to fuel me. I’ve been going back, listening to music that impacted me growing up. Songs I hear on the radio everyday, but I didn’t realize what’s only popping in Detroit. It feels like a whole new energy in the city. It’s inspiring to watch, to the point it inspired me to go harder than ever. It’s like the phoenix rising out of the ashes.”

The album announcement video plays snippets from the upcoming album, footage of Sean’s childhood home and features cameos from Young Thug, Wiz Khalifa, Post Malone,A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, and more. Find the album on major digital streaming platforms on September 4th. Back in May, Sean hinted that the album could feature beats from the late J. Dilla.

Sean’s last release was Double or Nothing, his collaborative tape with Metro Boomin. Earlier that year, he dropped his fourth album I Decided. The album hit number one on Billboard‘s United States charts. Sean released the original Detroit mixtape in September 2012. The project featured Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Wale and French Montana.
