140th and Lenox Avenue has officially been renamed “Lamont “Big L” Coleman Way.” On Saturday (May 28), a renaming ceremony was held for the street, which honors the late Big L, who was killed at in 1999 when he was 24-years old. The street renaming also comes after a petition campaign from the creators behind Street Struck, an upcoming documentary about the rapper’s life.
Prior to the event, the Street Struck team went to Instagram to announce the street renaming.
“It took a whole lot of effort and Support to get to this great point but as an collective we made it happen,” the Instagram announcement read. “The Biggest Thank you’s go out to the Dope 500 plus people who signed and passed the petition around so we could get this street renamed. There are entirely tooo many good people that gave this their support, so with all my heart, I personally want to say THANK YOU!!!!”
Last year, Okayplayer spoke with Buckwild about producing “Put It On,” which came to be Big L’s biggest hit.
“I still miss him,” he Buckwild said. “He learned so much from the first album and was definitely headed to the next level with the new shit. He was literally working out the contract with Roca-a-Fella because Dame [Dash] and JAY-Z wanted to sign him, so that tells you what kind of mainstream artist he was about to become.”
