Are Donald Glover’s Tweets About A Show Being Canceled or Cancel Culture?

Donald Glover’s tweets about film and TV creators have got fans confused.

On Monday night, rapper/actor/writer Donald Glover took to Twitter for the first time in five months to vent. The Atlanta creator was apparently miffed about cancel culture. Or TV shows being literally canceled. Regardless, the reception was mixed.

“Saw people on here having a discussion about how tired they were of reviewing boring stuff,” he wrote in regards to TV and film. “We’re getting boring stuff and not even experimental mistakes(?) because people are afraid of getting cancelled. So they feel like they can only experiment [with] aesthetic. (Also because some of [them] know they’re not that good.)”

Followers were mostly divided in their response. If Glover’s talking about the film industry not renewing shows due to shaky initial ratings, he has a point. It’s normal for shows without immediate cult followings to be cut before they have the chance to fully develop an ongoing story. That reaction from the industry puts more pressure on creatives, especially Black and brown ones. However, if he’s referring to the “cancel culture” that right-wing pundits spend hours talking about, the response could get a little dicey.

Regardless, Donald Glover’s not giving any clarification. And given his relationship to social media, the amount of work on his plate, and the potential backlash from the wrong explanation, it’s not that likely we’ll get one soon.

In other news, we could at least get a new season of Atlanta soon. The Hollywood Reported said in March that Glover’s new eight-figure deal with Amazon won’t affect the third and fourth season of the show, which went into production in March. Glover previously called the upcoming seasons of the show “some of the best television ever made,” adding that “Sopranos only ones that can touch us.”

Stay tuned for further updates on Donald Glover and the next two seasons of Atlanta.
