BBC Announces Amy Winehouse Documentary in Honor of 10-Year Anniversary of her Death

The Amy Winehouse documentary will be told from the perspective of her mother, Janis.

On Wednesday, the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC Two and BBC Music announced10 Years On, a documentary on Amy Winehouse told from the perspective of her mother Janis. As the title suggests, the documentary comes ten years after the award-winning singer's death.

"I don't feel the world knew the true Amy, the one that I brought up," Janis said in a release. "I'm looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy." Janis noted that her vision of Amy "often differs from the narrative we have been told before."

Janis was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003, and said she wanted to make the documentary before MS "threatens to strip her of her memories of Amy." In 2014, she published the book Loving Amy: A Mother's Story.

The documentary--produced by Curious Films--will include interviews with family and friends of the late singer and explore her life and career before her tragic death at age 27.

"Amy was a true musical icon," Dov Freedman, executive producer for Curious Films said in a statement. "We couldn't be prouder to help those closest to Amy reclaim her story, 10 years after her death."

In 2015, the Asif Kapadia-directed documentary Amy won an Oscar for Best Documentary. Winehouse's family distanced themselves from the picture, saying it was a "missed opportunity to celebrate her life and talent and that is both misleading and contains some basic untruths."

"I felt sick when I watched it for the first time," Winehouse's father Mitch said of the documentary. "I felt sick when I watched it for the first time. Amy would be furious. This is not what she would have wanted."
