An Alabama high school teacher was placed on administrative leave with pay on Monday for using a racial slur when asking students to turn down music they were playing during class.

The incident, which took place last Friday at Hoover High school, occurred in teacher Teddie Butcher's food and nutrition class. One of the students, a senior at the school, was playing Tupac's "Dear Mama," when Butcher returned to the classroom and said "Turn the ni**er tunes off," according to AL.com.

Shenita Morrow, the mother of the senior student, said she is concerned with the "comfort level" Butcher had in saying the racial slur to the students, and ended up meeting with Butcher and an assistant principal to address the incident.

Morrow's daughter was also present during the meeting, and voiced how Butcher's use of the word hurt her.

"After meeting with [Butcher], it's just baffling to me how someone does not understand the severity of the weight of that word," Morrow said.

Butcher, who admitted to using the slur, also apologized to the class.

According to Hoover school superintendent Dr. Kathy Murphy, the incident is being investigated.

"As we are addressing this matter, we will be looking at our board's policy and obviously taking a look at the state Teacher Code about expectations and we'll be putting her conduct and behavior up against what we know is professional conduct of one's self," Murphy said.
