The Academy Tries to Fix its Diversity Issue By Inviting 774 New Members

Twoyears after the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag made national news, the Academy is still trying to work out their diversity issues.

But slowly, they'rehandling it. Yesterday, the Academy invited 774 new members, a new record, to its organization. This new list includes A-listerslike Dwayne Johnson, Jordan Peele,Priyanka Chopra, Briton Riz Ahmed, Gal Gadot, and Barry Jenkins, who took home the Best Picture Oscar forMoonlight thisyear.

It's when you take a closer look at the overall picture do things get a little more interesting. Thenew class is 39% female, which, according to Vanity Fair, brings up the women numbers in the organization from 27% to 28%. As far as minorities, 30% of the new members are people of color, raising that number from 11% to 13% in the academy.

Still not the best numbers. But we're getting there.
