Two years after the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag made national news, the Academy is still trying to work out their diversity issues.
But slowly, they’re handling it. Yesterday, the Academy invited 774 new members, a new record, to its organization. This new list includes A-listers like Dwayne Johnson, Jordan Peele, Priyanka Chopra, Briton Riz Ahmed, Gal Gadot, and Barry Jenkins, who took home the Best Picture Oscar for Moonlight this year.
It’s when you take a closer look at the overall picture do things get a little more interesting. The new class is 39% female, which, according to Vanity Fair, brings up the women numbers in the organization from 27% to 28%. As far as minorities, 30% of the new members are people of color, raising that number from 11% to 13% in the academy.
Still not the best numbers. But we’re getting there.
