The legacy of martial arts icon Bruce Lee will live on in Mason Lee. Mason, 32, has been tapped to star as Bruce in a forthcoming, currently untitled biopic directed by his father Ang Lee (Life of Pi, Brokeback Mountain). Bruce, who died in 1973 at 32-years-old, was an actor, director and martial arts expert best known for films Fist of Fury, Enter the Dragon, The Way of the Dragon and 26-episode ABC series The Green Hornet.
Ang and Mason have no relation to Bruce Lee. The late film star was last portrayed by Korean-American actor Mike Moh in controversial 2019 Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.
“Accepted as neither fully American nor Fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Gung Fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” Ang Lee said in a statement, per Variety. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”
Mason, who’s Taiwanese-American, has been an actor since his childhood. The 32-year-old has starred in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and The Hangover Part II, also directing an episode of ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat.
