‘Abbott Elementary’ Took Over the 2022 Emmy Awards

Zendaya, Lizzo, Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph and more took home gold statues during the 2022 Emmy Awards on Monday night.

The stars were out on Monday night (September 12) during the 2022 Emmy Awards. Hosted by Kenan Thompson and held at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theatre, the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards boasted big wins from shows including EuphoriaThe White LotusDopesickTed Lasso and Abbott Elementary, which begins its second season on September 21.

Abbott Elementary actress Sheryl Lee Ralph made a historic feat as the second Black woman to win in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category, 35 years after Jackée Harry won for 227 in 1987.

“To anyone who has ever ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn’t wouldn’t couldn’t come true I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like,” Ralph said in an emotional speech. “This is what striving looks like, and don’t you ever, ever give up on you.”

Also representing for Abbott Elementary was series creator and actress Quinta Brunson, who had to step over comedian and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel to take the stage. While Kimmel received online backlash for the stunt, an unbothered Brunson shared her thoughts on her award-winning moment and teased her Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance on Wednesday.

“I don’t know I know Jimmy Kimmel. The bit didn’t bother me,” she said. “Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first big late-night spot, he was one of the first people to see Abbott Elementary. He was the first person to message me on Instagram. He was so excited it was going to be on ABC. I was happy it was Jimmy. He’s one of the comedy godfathers. Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him.”

Also taking home Emmys were Lizzo for Watch Out For The Big Grrrls (Outstanding Reality/Competition Series), Lee Jung-jae for Squid Game (Lead Actor – Drama Series) and Zendaya, receiving her second Lead Actress – Drama Series Emmy for Euphoria.
