According to an article in the New York Times articles, DJ Premier constructed the album using isolated vocals DJ Solar was holding on to. (Although Premier and Solar were not on speaking terms, the two were able to work out a deal; even though, now, Solar says he believes he deserves production credit and wants to be added to the album’s credits.)
It took Premier 18 months to craft the album using these vocals. The album features verses from J. Cole, Q-Tip, M.O.P., Royce 5’9, Big Shug, Freddie Foxxx, Jeru The Damaja, Group Home, and more.
