With the Yes Lawd! remix album just hours away from arrival, all eyes and ears are on Knxwledge; current king of the phantom loop. But as we ready our hearts, heads and necks for the twisted blessings of a NxWorries recalibration at the behest of Stones Throw’s most prolific beat (re)constructor, it seems important to note that there’s absolutely nothing unconventional or out-of-character to the concept of this project.
In fact, even the most surface-level scan through the producer’s impossibly-deep Bandcamp catalog reveals an unrivaled status amongst peers; that of a singular time and space bending force, opening holes to bygone eras and still distant futures with each off-kilter flip. Currently, there are more than 70 releases posted, comprising studio albums, EPs and a pair of mixtape series devoted to the art of building new worlds out of seemingly opposed musical eras.
His dueling WrapTaypes and HexualSealings exploits are extensive volumes of case-study chops; mountains of mash-ups that hold equal reverence for hip-hop luminaries and pop-leaning rappers alike (really pulling from that peak plastic 2011-2014 era in the more recent half.) Each installment a spectacle in its own right. In Knxw’s hands, even the most damaging frequency is never beyond repair. He doctors the guilty pleasures of a late-era Weezy and Rick Ross collaboration with psychedelic soul, unifies the now splintered Meek/Drake cell with breezy beachside blues, ultimately offering a shameless alternative to the songs you can’t stand to admit you like (or at least tolerate.)
And some of them probably deserve even more burn than the original.
We’ve scoured the Bandcamp banks to collect some Knxwledge’s most miraculous fix-ups; Wraptaypes and HexualSealings standouts that offer new life and replay value to the proto trap anthems and regular degular r&b hits that needed it most.
