New Book Service Delivers Books By Black Authors To Your Door

A new subscription book service wants to connect readers with black literature from across the diaspora.

Called Noir Reads, the service will deliver two to three fiction and nonfiction books each month to a subscriber's doorstep — all for the cost of $35 for one month or $100 for three months. You can also offer the service as a gift to someone too.

"With Noir Reads, we aim to help people discover voices of African descent actively exploring the Black experience through fiction and nonfiction," the service's website reads. "It can be hard to find diverse Black literature and a community to engage around it – we hope Noir Reads can make it easier."

According to a report from Huffington Post, Noir Reads has nearly 100 subscribers since making its launch this past Monday (the company has sold nearly half of the 200 boxes they prepared for its launch).

"Blackness is complex and diverse, but this basic fact becomes overshadowed, or erased by continually centering African American narratives," Zellie Imani, one of the founders of Noir Reads, said in that same report. "Instead, we want Noir Reads to explore, and not ignore, the vast and rich histories of the African Diaspora."

The first collection of books subscribers can look forward to receiving will be Angela DavisFreedom Is A Constant Struggle and Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor's From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation. But judging by the website other books a part of future packages will include: Ta-Nehisi CoatesBetween the World and Me; Assata Shakur's Autobiography; James Baldwin's Going to Meet the Man; and Cornel West's Democracy Matters.

"With a looming Trump presidency, we wanted books to help readers navigate this racist political landscape and offer ways to move forward,” Imani said. “The books can help us process these issues in an efficient way.”
