The Philly legend unpacks a Kool G Rap classic

Fresh off the road with the mighty Roots crew, Black Thought has been gracing screens of all sizes.  Last week, the Roots frontman starred in his very own segment of Terence Nance's surreally profound Random Acts of Flyness following a stirring tribute to Trayvon Martin, released adjacently to the Jay-Z produced documentary, Rest in Power.

A few days back, Mr. Trotter took a more studious approach. As the latest guest on Pitchfork's new series, Verses, Thought took the scalpel to his favorite verse of all-time: Kool G. Rap's "Roads to Riches." Picking apart a narrative sewn of intricate wordplay, and the visceral images of hustle dreams and nightmares, Thought explains how the song mirrored the life he was living as a 15-year-old South Philly kid with a newfound passion for rhyme schemes and a still unknown band with varying names and (okay)players.
