Jamila Woods is one of our favorite human beings here at Okayplayer. She signifies everything that is awesome about being black, woman and awesome. The phrase: “God broke the mold” applies to not only her, but all of the black-and-brown women who exist today.

To commemorate that sentiment, plus keep the attention on her critically acclaimed debut, HEAVN, Jamila has released, “Holy,” one of the standout cuts from the project in video form. Directed by fellow friend to the site (and really cool person) Sam Bailey (Brown Girls) — Holy is a declaration of self-love and self-preservation, utilizing the connection black women specifically have with the Great Creator.

From the quiet strength in her hair to her surreal, yet connected tie to black women as a collective — Jamila Woods is full of optimism and sprinkles #BlackGirlMagic all throughout this visual work of art. With this video (plus the unreleased alternative version produced by Dee Lilly) out and available for viewing — Woods’ absolutely necessary-for-these-times message and voice are being spread from state to state on tour.
