Prince Paul and DJ P. Forreal return in episode 6 of their Dubspot debate series Paul vs. Paul. In this episode they cover a range of topics including glasses, loudness, beatboxing techniques and pickup lines. Of course they also have to touch on DJing – this time it’s bpm counting. The episode is capped by a game of one-on-one basketball that proves Prince Paul’s got some pretty fly street ball moves, but that still doesn’t mean he’s got this one in the bag. DJ Prince Paul teams with his son Paul Jr. aka DJ PForreal for the hilarious comedic segment Paul vs. Paul – a series of father-son debates about pop culture and music presented by Dubspot. In this episode they weigh the elder Paul’s golden era of hip-hop against what he calls the “copper era” of his son’s generation. They discuss a myriad of other topics including rap vocals, DJ cue points, noise gates and hand shakes – Prince Paul repping all analog for team old-school. DJ PForreal ultimately proves to his father that sometimes the newer innovation is superior to the old standby. Check the footage.

Prince Paul and Missy Elliott contributed a song to the score of Chris Rock‘s Pootie Tang – a song that was never released until now. The headmaster of Handsome Boy Modeling School, Prince Paul made the executive decision to drop a digital stream of this gem – produced by he and Don Newkirk for anyone still jones-ing to sine their pitty on the runny kine after all these years. The film has since become a cult classic for no reason in particular, but the incomprehensible dialog and Wanda Sykes‘ impassioned performance as Biggie Shorty have surely helped to enshrine the flick in the hallowed halls of our pop culture infested collective memory. Listen to Missy and Pootie sing their hearts out over the marshmallowy r&b track with your main damie.

23 years after its release, De La Soul‘s 1989 debut, 3 Feet High & Rising, still is as entertaining a listen as it was back in the day. The album certainly was unique for its time, turning upside-down the world’s expectations of what hip-hop sounded and looked like.  A seven-minute electronic-press kit for the album has been making the rounds on YouTube for awhile now, but it somehow escaped our eyes until this week.

On February 16, 2008, as Scotty was leaving a late night session at his Brooklyn studio, a stolen car broadsided the taxi he was traveling in, paralyzing him below the chest. After complicated spinal reconstruction surgery and seven-months of hospitalization, Scotty, remarkably, returned to the music world ten months later by mixing the Red Hot and Rio shows at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Opera House.

Now back in the studio, Scotty is working steadily on music part time in his specially constructed facility in Brooklyn, and is living nearby in an ADA wheelchair compliant public housing facility. While his main focus has been on rehabilitation and physical therapy, which takes him to NYU’s Rusk Institute three days a week, Scottyʼs keen insight and motivation as a creative artist remain as strong as ever.
