“You know how much weed they smoke. You expect them to notice some pictures?” Rap veteran Schoolly D posed that question in the decisive moment after the battle between rappers OHM and Jawnzap 7–and sparked raucous laughter from the Gladiator-esque gallery in the Troc’s upper deck and fan pool below. Philadelphia’s Trocadero was the scene for the melee that was Thursday night’s Red Bull EmSee, an interactive rap battle meant to fish out the best of the best coming up in Philly’s rap-pond. Jawnzap 7, who rocked the No. 7 Eagles jersey, managed to make his own Vick-like scramble out of that round. Judges Schoolly D, Redman, and Joell Ortiz made the call in his favor and matched those tense moments seven more time throughout the night as others made a play for the crown.

The event was hosted by Bun B of UGK fame and was held down by 100.3 The Beat’s DJ Greg Nitty. The roll call went like this: Mic Stew, Uno Lavoz, OHM, Jawnzap 7, Voss, Finesse, DNA, and Zm, all of whom were angling to get a golden ticket to the EmSee finals in Atlanta where judge Eminem and a host of others await the winner. In addition to the beats Nitty proffered, the good folks from Red Bull updated the rap battle for the digital age with a format that integrated TV screens, streaming the aforementioned pictures and lists of words the emcees had to use in their rhymes. The competitors were judged on technical prowess, originality, wordplay, and creative use of the words and images at their disposal.

Although there were a few witty quips out there for the quoting, it was Mr. Reggie Noble who came with the funniest line of the night, in reference to rapper DNA: “You used all the words and they were real clear. And clever too, you clever fuck.” Who knew Redman was an oracle (along with all of the competitors, who–if you believed their raps–were apparently clairvoyant enough to repeatedly predict each other’s sexual orientation as well as the habits and behavior of each other’s female relations)? His blessing ended up being a significant one as DNA and Mic Stew faced off in the finals. Mic Stew rallied to win with a verse that utilized DNA’s initials, declaring in a thrice-used phrase that riffed on the fact that his man had never “done nothing amazing.” Next stop for Mic Stew is the A, where he has got to show and prove that he can do something amazing.

Joell Ortiz, Pharoahe Monch and B.o.B. all come off on this “me so crazy” anthem and amid the general schizophrenia it’s actually hard to tell who’s who for a second but which ever personality is up first is the dominant one, for my money. (And just for the record, if you have to ask the question, you are probably a psycho). Joell Ortiz’s mixtape The Life & Times of Sebastian Rios is coming soon but so far he has not shared an exact release date with us normals.

Perpetual underdog Joell Ortiz just tweeted out this new joint “Marijuana Man” which may be inspired by this but otherwise is sort of self-explanatory. I am a sucker for any kind of superhero rap but I am confused about why JO is adopting a faux-country accent to flesh out his MM persona–Nuyoricans don’t deal in the yerba buena? As tweeted, Life & Times of Sebastian Rios should be forthcoming soon.

The people at FOR got this exclusive footage of the boy Joell Ortiz performing in Orlando. Joell spits an acapella version of his song “Battle Cry,” off the Farewell Summer EP. The excessive “oooohs” from the crowd get annoying, but Ortiz kills it with the bars. Video shot and edited by Aditya Pamidi.

It’s telling that in homage to KRS-One, Princeton New Jersey’s Kyle Rapps chose to re-imagine 1990’s Edutainment, the the album on which the Blast Master’s streetwise intellectualism became a little too preachy for some fans, and the minimalist loop based production that defined post LaRock BDPism started to feel dated. Re-Edutainment is a high minded set of well crafted songs by an earnest MC that is ultimately to be respected more than enjoyed.

The Teacha himself lends his trademark bombast to the defiant single “Rent,” and the student holds his own delivering an icy lament to counterpoint the fire and brim stone of KRS. Similarly, Rapps’ syncopated precision sets the stage for an explosive verse from mixtape murderer Joell Ortiz on “Hard Knock Kids.”

Yet, when left to carry a track by himself, Rapps tends to flounder, focusing on riding the beat with precise rhyme patterns to the point of self-consciousness. The braggadocio of “Class” stays in the pocket of the boom-bap track, but ultimately falls flat due to a lack of flavor and spontaneity. Similarly the bouncy track and playful subject matter of “Prom” cry out for an animated delivery and clever lyricism. Rapps settles for fairly standard monotone come-ons. Producer Kev Brown does a credible job re-creating the drum heavy template of late ‘80s minimalism. Such sonic backdrops offered golden era superheros open canvases on which to paint with colorful vocal flourishes. But, when combined with Rapps vanilla delivery the tracks can quickly take on a feel of dry repetitiveness.

KRS-One once (okay, hundreds of times) famously said that rap is something you do, while hip-hop is something you live. Kyle Rapps shows impressive technical skill and a penchant for compelling song concepts, but right now, he seems to just be rapping. If he can tap into his inner hip-hop spirit and truly let loose, he will come a lot close to delivering the statement album he is clearly aiming for.

Joell Ortiz was recently across the pond doing his thing in the UK. The BK lyricist made a stop off on Tim Westwood‘s show and spit some bars. Yes, dude is rhymin’ off the blackberry… but he’s ‘killin em’ with it.
