Jeymes Samuel AKA The Bullitts drops the title track from his black cowboy saga They Die By Dawn, featuring his usual dream rolodex of cameos, in this case Yasiin Bey (!) Jay Electronica (!) and Lucy Liu (!)–all (!)s for different, yet equally compelling, reasons. The track is everything you could wish for from an all-black-everything western, dramatic Sergio Leone-style guitars chopped into a hip-hop beat of epic proportions, falling somewhere between the epic tuff of Dr. Dre’s track for “Kush” and the twangy bounce of Premier’s classic Mos Def beat “Mathematics“–not a bad place to fall. The film score, complete with bugle calls, rolls on for a full 2 minutes and some seconds before Yasiin and Jay Elec heed the call of duty and draw for the lyrical six-shooters. Jeymes Samuel, the multi-talented evil genius behind The Bullitts, spoke to Life +Times recently about his music, his new film They Die By Dawn (screening this Saturday, March 16th at SXSW–stay tuned for more info!) and his love for Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, among other topics. Perhaps the most intriguing jewel he dropped though is about his work on the definitely-existent and apparently-amazing but as-yet-unheard Jay Electronica LP Act II: The Patents Of Nobility (the turn), which is still in Roc Nation limbo. So far the main pay-off of Jay Elec-Jeymes collabo seems to be that in patented Hov style, Jay-Z has scooped up The Bullitts to work on the soundtrack for the Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle The Great Gatsby with him. On working with Jay Electronica:

I’m probably the only person. I headlined Big Chill in Summer 2011 as The Bullitts; I had Lucy Liu on stage narrating all of her parts from the album, and my side guy was Jay Electronica, who’s supposed to be one of the most elusive men not only in hip-hop, but in show business. Sometimes I’d ask, “How come you’ve always been on anything I ask you to? Whenever I ask you to do something, you do it no question.” He goes, “What’s admirable about you Jeymes, is your whole aim is based around planned excellence.” So that’s why he always does guest appearances with me when I ask him to. Our chemistry is amazing. He’s my brother, we bonded. The [friendship] just came from running up and down, driving around and different things, and then the music came. He saw me playing guitar and he was like, “This is the guy to do my album!” And we just really got on musically. If you listen to “Eternal Sunshine,” he’ll take Jon Brion‘s score, and assemble it in what would be called an overture, a compilation of all the different musical series, and rhyme over the whole thing and call it “Act I.” Within it, he’ll put samples of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and Gene Wilder talking. These things are some of my favorite films and my biggest influences. That’s why our chemistry is so much fun to see. It’s a really easy thing. I can create a track for Jay Electronica tomorrow and not even present it to him, I just know it’s something that he’ll think is super-amazing. I will say this: his album is a masterpiece. A masterpiece. We live in a world where the bar is four. Before, the bar was ten. Jay Electronica as an MC is from a time where the bar was 10. He’s amazing.

Poet, songwriter, producer and music exec D.Prosper just hit us with his new full-length LP Atom 12.12.12.–a free project which features cameos and beats from Jay Electronica, Flying Lotus, and the homie Rashad “Tumblin Dice” Smith among other luminaries. Besides the fact that I am a sucker for conspiracy theories and ghetto orientalism (pyramids, politics and fly girls in headscarves all over this thing) this project is a very thorough work of musical art. As proof positive of both that fact and of the continued existence of Jay Electronica (his verse here does not count as a full-blown unicorn-sighting in my book–but where there’s unicorn droppings, there’s unicorns, yo) we offer the Jay Elec feature “Atom Anthem.” The ill Bollywood flip on the FlyLo-produced “Elephant Ride” is kinda my joint, also. So since it’s a free project I’m just going to go ahead and throw that after the jump as a special hidden groove bonus track to this post. Ryan Leslie sat down to powwow with Sway on MTV’s RapFix recently and spoke at length about a follow-up to his current Les Is More LP (Les Is More 2: Les Is Even More. Dead ass. That’s the for-real title) and his views on local versus national elections (surprisingly close to the philosophies expressed by Killer Mike and Lupe Fiasco, who I suspect might be on very different bandwidths of the political spectrum). Then, almost by accident, R. Les drops the minor bombshell that he’s been collaborating with the reclusive Jay Electronica. Prompting an immediate “What!?” from Sway, Les goes on to tell his tale of his studio cipher with Jay Elec on a farm in the English countryside, flanked by a garage full of vintage Bentleys and Rolls Royce. Music set) Santigold, Jill Scott and Janelle Monáe to a single venue on the same day and then premiered unheard jams from Gary Clark, Jr and then said (just as a side-note): Jay Electronica is real (see below–perhaps the most musical phrase of the whole show for Okayplay-ears: “The album will be out soon, we mixing now. In one of the best interviews we’ve heard NaS give on the Life Is Good circuit so far, BBC Radio 1‘s Benji B asks Nasir to break down some of his LP-cuts, his Amy Winehouse-connect, and also (at around the 23-minute mark) brings up the subject of a Jay Electronica-collab, to which NaS interestingly responds as follows:

I wanted to get him to do the entire Untitled album, the N-word album. He had ideas. He was pulling records from J Dilla… He was pulling records and he was there with me while I was working on it. And he did the first record on there and it would’ve been so ahead of its time because he wasn’t signed and he wasn’t out there like that. So it would’ve been great right now to go back and say yo this dude produced my whole album years ago. That would’ve been cool and he’s ahead of his time like that.

Jay Electronica‘s Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn) is one of the most anticipated albums in the history of Rap. As a huge fan of the man’s sparse collection of work myself, it is one of my most anticipated albums ever in life. About an hour ago Jay tweeted a screenshot of his iTunes with a tracklisting of the album. We’ve been hearing rumors to expect this to drop in October (yes, of this year!). I remember waiting for Act II on Christmas eve (or was it New Years Eve) in 2008 (or was it 2009?)… you get my point. Back in March we heard from ?uestlove after Act II had been turned in (according to Jay E’s twitter) saying that Hov had the album and “listens to it constantly, says it’s his favorite record of 2012…” but that Jigga was wanting some sort of single.

Well according to the screen shot, the album features Kanye West (twice), Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, The-Dream, The Bullitts, Diddy, Ronald Regan (lol), and more.
