As everyone is aware, it’s been a while since a full Goodie Mob record came out. A year after debuting their song, “Fight to Win” on The Voice, the ATL crew has finally given us some more details on their reunion album. Age Against The Machine is set to drop on June 18th. Speaking with Fuse TV the group’s manager Larry Mestel said

“It’s future-sounding. It’s not really what you would think Goodie Mob would be. I think people will be surprised in a positive way when they hear it.”

Nervous? You aren’t the only one. I am quite excited to see what Cee-Lo meant when he said that the new music sounds like “Public Enemy on acid.”

Coming with this exclusive Goodie Mob leak “I’m Set” The Los Angeles Leakers are clearly running a much tighter game than their basketball playing namesakes (I don’t have a dog in that fight, really, I just dislike the Lakers on general principles). The song itself is evidence that the Goodie Set are tuning up their offense as well–eschewing gameshows, spacesuits and rock opera chords this time around in favor of straight ahead rap game over an undeniable marching band/go-go beat of big horns and kettle drums. In contrast to other recent outings, team captain Cee-Lo lets all the players get some time on the court (ok I’m just gonna abandon the over-stretched sports metaphor now, cause I don’t even watch sports) and even his un-flashy but tuff vocal additions almost make you believe he still lived in the hood, instead of a hollywood mansion made out of pink cotton candy sprinkled with rhinestones. Which is where we know he lives in real life. Stream the tagged-up leak below and prepare to get cautiously psyched about the re-emergence of Goodie Mob.

Since Goodie Mob reunited, they released their single “Fight to Win” – and now, they’re shooting a video for it. The Mob allowed MTV to go behind the scenes of their upcoming clip, where the group also spoke about the comeback album they’re currently working on, Age Against The Machine. “We’re back where we left from,” Khujo stated, “we’re putting a message in the music. Motivating.” The album has yet to be scheduled with a release date, but Cee Lo Green assures us that it’s going to be a hit. In the meantime, Cee Lo is becoming a bigger hit himself. Adding yet another title to this name, HR reports he’s been appointed the chief creative officer of Primary New Wave Music–a management, marketing and music publishing company that will now look at him as a partner instead of a client. Age Against the Machine will be the title of the upcoming LP by reunited ATLegends Goodie Mob. Whatever you might think of their newly acquired gold-outfits and their NBA-aspirations, the prospect of a brand new Goodie Mob full-length is one that’s hard to not be intrigued by. We’ve been working on that album really vigorously and it’s coming out very well. I think people will be very pleased – our core audience and also this new audience that we are aspiring to acquire. It’s a very broad album, very well done and I can’t wait for people to hear it.

Debuting their first joint recording in eleven years on The Voice earlier this year, here’s Goodie Mob taking “Fight to Win” to Jimmy Kimmel. The reincarnated Mob, who have strayed considerably from the more nappy side of their roots, sparked some controversy in our comment section on that last post. Y’all feel any different about this now? I mean didn’t we all know, deep down, that the day would eventually come when Goodie Mob would be announced as “Goodie Mob featuring Cee-Lo Green?”

The 2012 Billboard Music Awards went down last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and although there were no big shockers amongst the winners list–Adele reprised her Grammy sweep, taking home a ridiculous 12 awards–there were plenty of great performances for the history books. John Legend and Jordin Sparks performed a moving Whitney Houston tribute (below), Goodie Mob honored MCA & the Beastie Boys by throwing some “Fight For Your Right” into their “Fight To Win” (after the jump) and–most historically–Alicia Keys performed a duet with Stevie Wonder (above) as part of his recognition for this year’s Icon Award.

The trio (Sleepy Brown, Rico Wade, Ray Murray) played a massive role in the commercial ascent of Southern soul and hip-hop music. They introduced the world to Outkast and Goodie Mob, and acted as the creative force behind classic albums (Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik) and commercial megahits (TLC‘s “Waterfalls”). But despite their credentials, they rarely come up in G.O.A.T. discussions, and largely avoid the public eye (Sleepy Brown is the exception). As you may already be aware, original ATLiens Goodie Mob donned some gold Africa Galactica space-armor to debut their new song “Fight To Win” live on Cee-Lo Green’s dayjob AKA The Voice last night. “Fight To Win” is pop music on an epic scale, rap taken to the arena-sized level of a Queen anthem somewhere between “We Are TheChampions” and the Flash Gordon OST. Here’s the thing after years of slowly-building anticipation culminating in the announcement that GM signing on to write the official song for the NBA 2012 season, I’m not sure I feel it. I’m very unsure, in fact, that I want Goodie Mob to be making epic pop music, as opposed to, say, peeping in my window. It’s too soon to call; I am still absorbing but okayplayers please lock in your votes and tell me how to feel about this song. And while you’re up, s’plain me why Gip and Cee-Lo’s teeth are illuminated with a glowstick grill.
