After watching Felix Baumgartner’s amazing 23+ mile base jump this weekend, I’ve been doing some serious re-evaluation of my life. Baumgartner set world records this weekend, and I rearranged the furniture in my bedroom. It doesn’t exactly balance out, but it’s OK. Especially since I get paid to listen to mixtapes and then tell the internet why they should listen to them. It’s definitely not as cool as a free fall from 128,000 feet in the air, but I’m scared of heights anyway…

I, Ced – “The Soul Mansion Mix Part One”:
I, Ced first popped up on my radar with his “Love… Meaning” single with Coultrain, and since then I’ve been a fan.  However for some reason I’d never heard any of his DJ work until coming across this mix where he shows some crew love to Hawthorne Headhunters & Black Spade as well as dropping original re-edits and remixes of joints by Ta’Raach and Rainy Davis before dropping classic soul gems from Gladys Knight & The Pips and MFSB.  Definitely worth a listen!

Over the weekend, the music world mourned the passing of Beastie Boys member and Brooklyn’s native son, MCA–including okayplayer Founder/CEO/Prez, ?uestlove. DJs pay their respects with their hands (and records) and at Mixtape Mondays we’d like to pay ours by including few recent Beasties mixes from Mr. Cee, Z-Trip, DJ DL, and OKP homie Mick Boogie. We also received a fresh electro mix from DJ Sakir and a Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) mix from NYC’s DJ Rashad Hayes.

Mr. Cee – Beastie Boys Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Tribute
HOT 97′s Mr Cee honored the Beastie Boys a few weeks ago for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. After MCA‘s passing, he posted the mix as a download. The 20-minute set is almost entirely culled from Licensed to Ill, so turn up the bass, lay low on the treble, and feel the beat of Ad Rock‘s Roland TR-808 kick drum like it’s the summer of ’87.

Z-Trip – Presents All Access: A Beastie Boys Mix
Z-Trip released this short Beasties mix last year, but it’s new to us. If you’ve heard his mixes before, you know he’s always on some genre-bending, mash-up, turntablist,megamix-type ish. The Beasties, of course, are a perfect fit for this sort of treatment.

DJ DL – 3 MCs and Some DJ
Here’s a quick, single-take mix, mostly from vinyl (respect) in honor of MCA. It’s an hour and half long, features a lot of 12″ remixes and rarities, and is available as a download.

DJ Rashad Hayes – Mos Def Mix
Rashad Hayes is an NYC-based DJ (you can catch him on Fridays at The Greenhouse). He occasionally posts artist tribute mixes via Soundcloud. Here’s one he just posted in honor of one of his favorite MCs of all time (ours, too!), Yasiin Bey. The mix actually refers to Mr. Bey by his former name (no, not Dante–the other one) but hey, we don’t want any trouble. In any case, this hour-long mix covers a lot of ground.
