Solange Knowles Sings Soul-Pop: More Than Just B's Little Sis

Posted on 06/13/2008
We should all chip in and get Amy Winehouse some rocks for her birthday. If it weren’t for her, the sudden interest in classic soul and doo-wop might not exist. Added to the list of Winehouse torch-carriers, after Estelle, Adele, Paloma Faith and Duffy, is Solange. If you're like me, you only knew Solange Knowles as the one who wasn't Beyonce. But after listening to the rough draft of her forthcoming album SoL-AngeL & The Hadley Street Dreams, you might attempt to remember her on a more individualized basis.

Being guided through the album by her almost as famous father, Matthew, was like listening to a proud papa gush about his kid getting straight A's on her report card. Solange's songwriting skills and independent spirit were a frequent topic as he listed her credits, including penning "Get Me Bodied," "Flaws and All" and "Upgrade U" for her big sister’s B’Day album, as well as several tracks for Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams and Trinitee 5:7.

The most exciting track on the album is a collaboration with Bilal called "Cosmic Journey." The duo's voices collide beautifully in a spaced-out, LSD trip of a love song. As with most of the album, Mr. Knowles described this as one for the hipsters, convincing me that one of us didn't know what that word meant. When I think of the hipster crowd, I definitely don't think 'soul-pop,' the term they've coined for SoL-AngeL, but what's in a name. As the track sped on, it warped into a barrage of R&B and electronica as if someone accidentally slipped on The Who, who said, ‘No Tommy today. Let’s just play Justice.’

The video for the first single, "I Decided" (produced by The Neptunes), is a stylized mash-up of historical images and rebels: Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics, the Confederate Flag, the Audobon Ballroom, Che Guevara and the Black Panthers provide the backdrop for Solange and her two backup singers as they march through history with their best Martha Reeves and the Vandellas impersonation. Rich and vivid as the video is, the connection to the song is a little foggy, but it is an amazing look.

With so many distinct voices from the industry lending their talents on production (The Neptunes, Jack Splash) and lyrics (Lamont Dozier, Cee-Lo), it’s no wonder this album isn’t the watered down pop you might expect. Not that there aren’t some confusing moments with “Champagne Chronic Nightcap” featuring Lil Wayne being at the top of the ‘are you serious?’ list. But by and large, the experienced 22-year old wins you over with her solid lyrics (“I Told You So” puts a clever spin on a good relationship by predicting its demise) or on the musical end of the spectrum with her newly assembled band, The Hadley Street Dreams (named after the location of her Houston studio), taking you on a fantasy ride back to the sixties and seventies.

I had her pegged as an spin-off artist from someone more successful, but after hearing that track ill give the album a fair listen

I love the new album. I believe that some things could have been left unsaid. I am an up-and-coming R&B/Soul artist, and I truely understand the comments about imagery. As artists, we have a responsibility to our listers to deliver a message. Music used to be about love and had substance, now it about "chains" and "whips", sounds like slavery all over again to me, and our children are supposed to learn from that? Our people are in a state of emergency, if your have the opportunity to speak to the world, you should have somethinng to say that contributes to the well-being and uplifted of our people. All people. It's no different than going to church and gettin your spirit fed by a pastor. It okay to make music to dance to, it makes people feel good, it's even okay to stunt a little. Thats fine, but while you have the attention of children and misguided people, teach.

American Producers Can't produce anymore.
"R&B" without BASS is a real turn off, it's sound fake.
At least with Amy Whinehouse there is a real Bass and real
musicians.

This is cute...I wish she didn't have the "Beyonce Shadow" thing over her, but it is what it is...I'm actually looking forward to hearing this album. If you need to escape a R&B/Pop MegaStar's shadow, then this is the exact album you'll need to do it. Good look from the Neptunes and Jack Splash. QTip, not so much.

I have to agree with some of the comments. Big Ups to nore and strongblkwoman comments. Lyrics, Lyrics,Lyrics. We do we keep accepting and sugarcoating Bullsh*t in the music industry.Time out for this foolishness. The real world aint worried about listening to recycled soul music. At least in the 60's it meant something........Hint. Marvin Gaye's What's Going On? Lawrence Fishburne said it best in School Daze"WAAAKE UUUP"

Dynamic attempt n Solange's part. I too was lost in how the video for I Decided fit with the song, but it was a bold move to get our attentions without relying on the popular trio of sex, drugs or violence and it worked. She young and new at this so let's just support her. The video can stand as an art form in itself so we shouldn't always expect for the video and song to fit. She presented powerful images and a great song..we could ask for more but she's given us two great vehicles to showcase her talent and future potential.

while i like the song and the video independent of one another, i think it's slightly problematic that she is channeling martha and the vandellas without the song having any political significance. unlike 'dancing in the street,' this song isn't the spark to riots and there aren't any political undertones either. i think it's almost disrespectful to put this song with that particular imagery. nonetheless i watch the video everytime it's on.

Solange cute imagery. However as an young black educator who works in an inner city school. young black girls need the message as well. Put out the message. I see teen pregnancy, promiscuity, and drug use of young black girls but what I constantly see in r&b female singers is an inconsistent message.Put out the real lyrics and align lyrics with the imagery. It appears as this was suppose to be deep by showing the black panthers and the evolution of music. Say Something!!!!!!!! You can appear deep by getting Q-Tip and other alternative artists but we know this is also an image. Walk the Walk all the time not just for the image of being deep. Continue your growth. You and other female r&b singers have a long way to go.

saw the video for the first time yesterday, and I like it. Why? Because it seems like she's doing her and not another Beyonce. I can appreciate that. The connection to the imagery has a lot to do with this being political season, which i think is a good look. I've been bumping Estelle for a minute now, it's nice to know I'll have more females to add to my new music collection

I like her voice, she definitely comes off edgier than I expected from her doing pop-soul (which I'm still kinda "eehhh" on)...but I won't prejudge, I'm going to wait to listen to the entire album.

The jury is still out on this one for me ... I just think the whole 60's/Girl group soul has already been done over and over again ... I love Amy and many of the others, but I just think Solange hasn't been original as it relates to FRESHNESS (meaning something that hasn't been done before) ... The British have got a lock on the 60's Soul revolution ... At any rate, I wish her well ...
