I'm Always Fu@#$n Wit Chu?uestlove's part Eulogy/Apology Letter/Manifesto on his favorite group Slum Village....a decade after the fact.respect to t-3 for having to hold more weight on your shoulders than most should right about now..... spring of 1997 before the Internet and me were a marriage made in hell i actually communicated with my friends the hard way.... the telephone. it wouldn't matter if i was in Wisconsin or Warsaw. I'd be on the phone longer than i could afford to be in hotels running up the bill back in the day. and this was before shawn gee had the genius monopoly business sense in managing for us and helping us overcome the deep water of the rap business (or ye, wayne, drake, keri, jill, com and others) back when we were sharing rooms and doing shows for a 10th of what we make now. one very expensive night when i was in cologne germany i heard a 10 second snippet followed by d'angelo and qtip snickering that they up on something that i aint hip to yet. so not wanting to miss out my broke ass called new york city and i made d'angleo play me the entire Fantastic Vol 1 tape from start to finish. (the were 20 songs at the most 1:00/2:00) my god it was like tribe and de la soul on acid! that was the last time i was jaw dropped in music from a fan standpoint. it was so incredible i didn't even feel threatened by them. i was like FINALLY SOMETHING TO INSPIRE ME! they manged to squeeze the last bit of life out of that innocent period of hip hop in which you made music with your peers in mind (not your press). you were going to sleep tryna imagine ghost and rae rewinding the tape likem"the hell they just say?" you wanted to walk through the spot like nino brown and have flav blow up your spot in the dj booth. i STILL create music from that level of wondering what "what's his face" thinking while they peep this, may not matter in today's climate but it matters to me if black milk gives me dap on a song or if erick sermon likes whatever trick i cooked up. that night back in 97 what i heard as my phone bill went to an astounding $300 dollars (i semi stiffed the club promoter, but he caught our agent out there and they took it out my pay for that summer tour) i can't describe what i heard. it was new, invigorating and JUST what the doctor ordered. it was the spark plug jump you needed to help your car to go that extra 400 miles as you travel cross country in a deserted road. i miss those days. i first heard purple rain in the phone. i first heard de la soul is dead in the phone. member that time period in music in which you played someone a song in the phone?! i wish those days could come back once more. i know that for the last 10 years ive brushed off the inevitable task of trying to explain slum village's importance to hip hop. it was so much easier to target the light-years-ahead genius of J Dilla and just call it a day on some "yall mofos just dont understand." .....sheeeeeeeeeeeeit. i guess part of me reveled on some "im up on some shit that only certain cats with their phd in funkology can understand" i mean i had a hard time enough trying to prove that dilla is the greatest beatmaker of all time then it was to champion the whole group.(blasphemy in the eyes of MANY in light of dre, primo, pete, quik, the squad and about 12 others---but on the low? they know what time it is)i owe Esvee an apology. i was just as enamored with Baatin and T-3 and Dilla as emcees as i was the beats, yet i let the world crucify them as i sat by idle and saved my own skin, reputation and music rep. similar to that of a jim crow nigger lover or a silent opposer of prop 8 in a room full of conservatives. it was too hard of an argument to even dream about winning. black people aint even built to champion anything that doesn't offer some sort of payoff or flash. we love underdogs because at least for an underdog there is the rare chance we can witness their rise to the heavens. and in the age of the pre blog, it was this kind of silly talk that many a middle class journalist holding on to that imaginary street cred needed to blow me out the water. but the truth is: the most fun thing about slum village was their moronic frat humor. to THIS DAY who can make bustin a move at a tupperware party as a boho in a room with a bunch of east side pig eatin niggas from detroit sound awesome?! not since too short has hip hop heard stooopid level's of beautiful misogyny over (and this is the plus for Slum) the BEST musical backdrop in the history of 90's hip hop. yes i did crossed that line. in honor of Baatin's passing im finna honor his whole group and the demo cum album that inspired a movement. Fans of Fantastic know EXACTLY where they were when they first heard this tape. i was fortunate enough to get a tape straight from dilla. full of crazy imagery that would fit at home on Critical Beatdown ("all you gotta do is grip yo meat, massage her, laugh with her, take a bath with her....devour her) full of middle school wolf ticket inside jokes worthy of "Skip 2 My Loop" era De La (heads TOTALLY catch them trying to figure (and clown) the words to Escape's "Just Kickin It" but ABSOLUTELY miss them ragging Color Me Badd's sophomore flop "Time & Change" right before the lines faster than a bullet, blink and you missed it "Fat Cat Song") and heavy on east side detroit shit talking. they just always made me wished i was in on the joke. (shit, maybe the joke was on me, cause lord knows after 60/70 listens i done caught many an inside joke with them snarkin on a cat or two and always wondering in the back of my head would they clown me just as hard. they truly made an art of rhythmic talking: "Fantastic pt 1" although not singing, THIS is how i wished the hypeman would back up their emcees. most try to "outddo" the emcee in the name of "keeping it HYPE! when in actuality they are gunning for that number one slot (Hov!)---the :52 mark of dilla "harmonizing" with baatin is a prime example of some lampin in the back of the class, smokin while teacher's back is turned coolness...."ayo.....wheelin.....dealin... nothing remarkable. but again it was all in the attitude that won me over. they adlib'd and ish tawked better than ANY group i knew. i mean wu tang made an art out of adlibs to the point that once lauryn hill's grafted rae's overused "a yo a yo....yo yo yo yo" came into play it was a tad stale. slum village left no onomatopoeia or senegalesesque pronounced stone unturned. THAT was the charm of Slum Village: they were regular cats who went over the heads of regular cats and gunned for the higher level cats to mortals, t-3's entry in "i don't know" ("im influenced to like...schhchhhhhh *his trademarked inhale/sigh/sucking teeth noise*.....um yknow") is just plain "whatever"---but to cats that (dare i take this license?) "who knew what time it was" said ALL of his lines were CRAZY. and CRAZY was beautiful. Nas could "props is a true thugs wife"/"sleep is the cousin of death" all he wants----im "wearing your mama like a lambskin". ![]() t3's Look of Love's pronunciation of "sa-lutt" or "spllinnnderNESS" or taking 4 secs to pronounce the word "yessssssssssssssssssssssssssss ---we'd just sit there for hours hypnotized like "these dudes are so crazy" the fact that words to them were percussion and drums more than a means of communication was right up my alley. just listen to the adlib subliminal magic of the "fantastic 2 and 3 interludes"---absolutely makes no sense. but they say it SO SOULFUL and FUNKY that it truly doesn't matter. for all i care they can sing the dictionary and they could manage to wrangle some funky way of pronouncing aardvark. breath control, alliteration, ignorance, snark, humor, inside jokes, soul, excitement, spontaneous spurts, edge, and innovation. its that sh--tcchcht---ayo. -akt.

Another shocking blow for the movement of Detroit Hip Hop! One more true pioneer have left us. I don't think hip hop heads will really understand what kind of blow this is because the real M.C.s of tha D is really grindin to get their art out in the market. Especially after the loss of Jay Dee and Proof. We have an understanding it's a blessing to do what you love as a career and each day is not promised. Jay Dee,Proof and Baatin are the founding members of the Hip Hop Shop days. Those open mic nights and hours in Mo Master Studios birth the real Detroit Hip Hop Movement. Baatin spirit will be with us forever!!!!!

It took me a few days to read this. Not because of lack of time, but I just didn't want to. I am a post Hip-Hop Shop music junkie. My intro to SV was at a Roots show when Things Fall Apart dropped. I had heard of them, but not the music. That next summer I saw Vol 2 in Best Buy and immediately copped it. I had refused to buy the Office Space soundtrack just for the song(Get Dis Money) that was played (ONLY) during the daily traffic report on WJLB in Detroit. I heard the production and the Detroit references and was hooked. It was thee album I longed for. It took some time but I finally got a complete copy of Vol. 1. Now I sit 11 years later waiting until September 22nd to hear Baatain's last words. As a die-hard Detroit hip-hop fan, Slum was my soundtrack! SV 4 life!

...one more thing: this letter was funny as hell but accurate. All of the same qualities that attracted Ahmir to SV were the same things that attracted me to them. They reminded me of the countless times I had talking trash with my friends growing up. They reminded me of how fun life was as a teenager growing up in Maryland. All the parties, all the girls, all the traveling, all the cruising town for some better girls, doing it up, styling....I can go on, but these cats reminded me of my people. On top of that, the music was the best I've heard in years. It made me search high & low for their music. Being late for work just so I could be the first in my city to purchase Trinity. Being moved by el's verse in Reunion about 10's transformation. Anticipating the self-titled album after vibin' off the Prequel album. Copping all 3 Dirty District albums, the Que D album, all of Phat Kat, Frank-n-Dank, Dwele, Dilla's solo offerings, Big Tone/Wasted Youth, PPP, Ta'raach...because they were all linked to this great group. Fukk it, I was geeked when Black Thought shouted 3 and 10 out on the Phrenology album, b/c B.T. NEVER shouts out another rapper in his rhymes. That's the ultimate respect!

I really hope we all don't allow hip-hop to kill off Slum Village because Dilla and Baatin are gone. I'm dealing with both of their deaths, but truthfully, I've always been supportive of the group first & foremost. I was really hating hip-hop at the turn of the century until I heard them murder Common on "Thelonius." That was the first time I heard SV, though I was already familiar with Dilla prior to that moment, b/c I had a 5-Elementz ep I bought in Detroit back in '96 with him producing Proof, Thyme & Mudd. I was trying to get cats in MD hip to it as far back as then, but they were sleeping just like they're sleeping, now. And I know you may not agree, but eLZhi, in my opinion, was the best thing that happened to SV. I say that b/c it progressed the movement. It made everybody better, b/c that iggah is nasty!!!
Anyhow, I'm hurt to loose Titus, but at the same time, I'm really looking forward to Villa Manifesto!! Please support this album!!! Tell people about it, call into commercial radio stations & demand that they play SV. Don't bootleg it, don't buy bootleg SV. Hip-hop is really depending on this moment, because it's SV's turn, now, to rule the industry!! 47

?uestlove, I respect you immensely, have always delighted in Baatin's genius at the mike, and am a no holds barred dilla fanatic. I like a great deal that you said here about t3's and baatin's skills, their humor, e. detroit references, slum village's innovation, all that. but you need to say more at what you hint at about the misogynist (and homophobic) lyrics. i think you've got something to say here, but you need to say it more clearly and more directly. i know you're saying something much more complicated than misogyny or homophobia is okay (cause they're not)... but spell it out more for us.

This is the saddest news I have heard in a long time. No disrespect but this hit me harder than Michael Jackson's passing. Slum Village was the most amazing hip hop group ever and their music will live on forever and ever. Quest - there is still plenty of time to keep the music of Titus and Dilla alive even in their passing, they will continue to inspire as long as we make an effort to keep the music alive. I am only 23 and did not discover SV until a few years ago when I never thought I would find a new favorite hip hop group. Since then I have been inspired and re-inspired by everything SV had to offer, and turned onto many more great artist like D'angleo ( Vodoo may be the most perfectly produced r&b album eve, respect), Frank n Dank etc. RIP Titus, thank you for everything, we will not let your music die.

When you listen to Amplified by Q-Tip, what you're hearing is an emcee as influenced by SV's lyrical styles as he's taken by Dilla's beats. Cats hating on Amplified for Tip's performance are missing the point. Tip is getting his SV on, and that's what makes that album so...musical if not lyrically deep. I hated at first, but I love Baatin and T3 now and have for some years. "Effortless, effortless shit" as Q-Tip says.

Fantastic Vol 2 was definitely a display of phunky soulful rhymes, whimsical ad-libs, back and forth banter and intriguing word-play of the highest order. It' funny how Baatin was usually the last emcees on each track, changing his voice and pitch, displaying his impeccable breath control. Ironically, my fav joint on that record was 2u4u; the beats, lyrics, and ad-libs jelled together masterfully, there's no hip hop record that comes close, and the chemistry they displayed on that record was crazy. Far too many hip hop journalists, pundits, purist, critics alike focused far too much on their lyrical content, I guess wanting conventional beats and rhymes. But Slum was far from conventional, which was the appeal. However, ironically they were true emcees in the truest art form, never deviating into generic pop songs. Baatin was an energetic, enigmatic lyricist, who mastered cadence, rhythms, and word-play. He was an unusual character who needed help, support and acceptance, its a sad story, but we celebrate the brother by listening to he and Dilla in all their glory on one of the greatest Hip Hop Albums of all time.

All true, all so very true, and to think I thought that I was by myself thinking the made up shit the SV was doing was sooo funny and creative... The funny thing is that I am so disappointed with Baatin's passing because I'm actually afraid that quality music is affected when things happen like this. Is SV gonna continue. Prolly' since they kept going after Dilla, but it just puts the whole idea of their presence in hip hop into perspective. 58

Way to capture the essence ? Slum V, Fantastic Vol 2. Hit me hard like the first time I heard Bonita Applebum (Off da"rewind that" like 8 times). Part hypnotic, Part mystical, and parts attitude, lyrical texture/dexterity and delivery/cadence.
Just like everybody grooved to Dilla's beats but didn't know it. Your favorite emcee borrowed from this group, as well as yoiur favorite producer. Keep doing your thing T-3 and Elzhi, R.I.P. to Baatin. dude you had style baby boy. Y'all alwayssounded like y'all were just having fun. Like hip-hop is supposed to be...Right? 59

RIP Baatin.
you said it questo! i ma try to give it some perspective from the outside point of view. @ all the detroit cats and all for whom it is a more personal loss, keep ya head up and his spirit alive. music's always been part of my life and i remember getting fantastic 2 (you could not even get vol 1 in germany, even though i was looking for it for so many years) and it totally blew me away. the way they were spittin was crazy. back then i couldn't understand none of that shit, but the flow was insane.i'm pretty sure there is a lot of hip hop heads out there (english as a mother tongue, or not), who can't even grasp a tenth of the shit SV says and still find it unique how they rap. sadly, moments i've had with some of the SV records will never come back...takin a sip of their freshness always made me feel a lil cooler. lol. i mean, if you make music as fresh, funky and original as the SV, the love is gonna come. salaam 60

I got hookd on DILLA's wrk listing to MF DOOM but the 1st time SlumV graced my ears was on a road trip from Sac to LA for my cuzins grad. We slapped Fantastic 1&2 for 8 1/2 Hrs in a mini van. We had plenty of other "TAPES" but T-3'S Detriot Swag mixed wit BAATIN'S science and delivery ova DILLA masterpeices locked us into this rythmic trance that made the time disappear. Their stance was something I could relate to. It was the soundtrack for a week of my life. Afer that I couldn't help be a fan ... I put everyone I know on to it. SLUM was that track you put on when you hadnt seen someone in a while like "Nigga you aint up on this!" By time TAINTED hit the airwaves SLUM had already became a staple in my "CD" collection. First Jay Dee now Titus ... I hope my support of them and their music helped contibute their lives, because they have contibuted and will continue to be in the soundtrack of mine.

It took a conversation last night with the mother of Baatin's daughter for me to realize he is the reason I'm having my own child now
If it weren't for his childhood friend introducing me to his baby's mom I would have never met my boyfriend Sometimes you wonder why some people come into your life and the reason Baatin came into my life was to make the life growing inside of me and for that I am very thankful He will be forever missed 65

?uest, I remember when you introduced me to SV that same year. We were introduced by a mutual friend when I came up to Philly for PMC. I remember you saying you have to play this tape for me. It was dark ourtside, dark inside your crib, you didn't even know my name but welcomed me in quickly, and only looked up to see if there was an expression on my face when you played the tape. First I thought "this fool is a little touched." It took me a while to really understand and appreciate Slum through all of their various forms over the years. I appreciate you for the fanatic introduction (answering the door, leaving strangers in the foyer and running up and down the steps to share a demo.) I'm obviously a little thrown off right now because I felt that for years I knew something most others didn't until I past it on to them the same way it was passed on to me.
R.I.P. Baatin T3 & Elzhi, Please keep on ?uest, Hip-Hop has no greater champion of it's essence than you Erich "You thought we broke up, but we was just reassembling" 68

If it was not for this site and Quest championing SV so hard i probably would never know who these cats where. Fantastic Vol. 1 and 2 are a couple of my all time favs and I usually listen to them at least once a month if not weekly. Quest, you opened my eyes to the genius of SV and I thank you for that. May Baatin RIP and live on through the music.

Nuff Said. You laid it down perfect all the nuance of SV! I could never understand how some fronted on thier rhyme style. The best in the pocket " 2 the beat" shit I ever heard. They took all the illness of "on the spot" freestlye (lightning in bottle) feeling and made consistently great songs with it. Genius! My group Schoolz of Thought had the honor of doing some really great shows with Slum across the country and in Canada and honestly they were cool Muhfuckas despite whatever level of notoriety my crew had. Baatin always had gem or two for me in reference to our African heritage and the transindental, metaphysical impact. He was really on some other shit. I said it about 20x's to 5 ppl "Damn, he was a Good Dude...Man Fo Real"

it was so much easier to target the light-years-ahead genius of J Dilla and just call it a day on some "yall mofos just dont understand." .....sheeeeeeeeeeeeit. i guess part of me reveled on some "im up on some shit that only certain cats with their phd in funkology can understand" i mean i had a hard time enough trying to prove that dilla is the greatest beatmaker of all time then it was to champion the whole group.(blasphemy in the eyes of MANY in light of dre, primo, pete, quik, the squad and about 12 others---but on the low? they know what time it is)
most try to "outddo" the emcee in the name of "keeping it HYPE! when in actuality they are gunning for that number one slot (Hov!)---the :52 mark of dilla "harmonizing" with baatin is a prime example of some lampin in the back of the class, smokin while teacher's back is turned coolness....
