Death Of The Muse: A Dilla TributeInspired by the LA Weekly’s revelatory interview with Ms. Maureen Yancey, mother of deceased producer and hip-hop luminary James Yancy aka J Dilla, Anti-/Epitaph recording artists Solillaquists of Sound have decided to put the power of change into the hands of the people. Solillaquists of Sound feat. J-Live, Chali 2na, and Ma Dukes "Death of the Muse" Solilla’s “Death of the Muse,” featuring J-Live, Chali 2na (formerly of Jurassic 5), and Ma Dukes herself will be made available for digital purchase at InSound.com for a minimum donation of $2. In an effort to alleviate the grim financial situation that has been intensified by her declining health, one hundred percent of the proceeds will go directly to Ms. Yancey. In addition to losing her house and taking on an insurmountable number of hospital bills while looking after Dilla in his time of illness, Ms. Yancey was also left with a difficult and estranged relationship with the current executors of her son's estate in the wake of his passing. “Our new album No More Heroes deals with the theme of heroism in a number of ways,” says Solilla group member/producer DiViNCi. “As a musician, Dilla was my biggest hero, so when we started working on the album a year ago, we intended on dedicating select parts of it to him and donating some of the proceeds to his estate. But as news began to circulate, particularly through the LA Weekly article, it really made it clear that a movement needed to be started to get all of the proceeds directly in the hands of Ms. Yancey.” ‘Death of the Muse’ serves as a tribute to Dilla’s legacy – a call to listeners to appreciate what they’ve got while it’s there, because it can be fleeting. It’s a testament that’s equally applicable to the character of Ms. Yancey. “The dignity and perseverance that she’s exuded during these difficult times is truly its own heroic feat,” DiViNCi continues. “It’s only right to pay homage and lend a hand to her in her time of need.” The phone call from Solillaquists was a bright moment in what has been a trying time in Ma Dukes’s life. “It swept me off my feet. It was a real mind-blower,” she enthuses. “You never know where your blessings will come from. Sometimes you think that all hope is gone, and then a miracle happens.” With her own Ma Dukes Foundation currently being set up to raise funds to go towards the youth of Detroit, and SoS group members in the process of launching their own non-profit organization, the Solilla Center 4 Creative Kids in Orlando, both involved parties are focused on putting their energies towards a greater good. “We all have greatness in us that we need to focus on,” Ms. Yancey emphatically states. “I’m going to hang in there as long as I can, and whatever the estate gives me, I’m going to look for the good in things because it always shines through. [The legal battle] is about more than the estate and the attorneys that handle it – it’s about a person and his legacy. And right now I know I have to do the things that Dilla would have wanted me to do, which is to help kids and keep pushing his message of positivity.” “We’re honored to be helping Ms. Yancey. She’s the type of person that makes you proud to be a human being,” says DiViNCi. “Despite all that she’s been through, she’s a rock of unwavering strength, faith, and humility. That gives us all the more reason to do our part to see that she receives everything she deserves.” - Sean Kantrowitz Please visit www.insound.com/madukesdonation to download "Death Of A Muse" and donate to Ma Dukes directly.

It's really dope, I have had a bunch of people hit me up wanting to do additional things to raise money and support. From concerts to photo auctions to people just spreading the word, people are doing what they can and it's beautiful.
Just to let you know, if you want to get any other donations directly to Ms. Yancey, that's what this project is all about. The song is secondary to the cause, it's really being put out in tandem with this so that we could use the power of the press and our resources at the label to get behind this movement. Our first and foremost goal was to set up a way to help Ms. Yancey without middlemen/companies dipping their hands in, so if you raise money in whatever means you choose and want it to get to her all you have to do is donate it through here http://www.insound.com/madukesdonation. And 100% of that donation will go to her. Let's get this thing going.. I want to make Ma Dukes faint with the first check.. Thanks again.. P.S. On the secondary note, thanks to those who commented about the song as well.. Like the rest of the album, we put a lot in to it and it's dope that ya'll dig it. TURN IT UP!! Happy Birthday Ma DUKES!!! 13

People always talk about doing something. Thanks for being about it. If all the Artists who claim to love Dilla's talent and what he repped. Just donated $100.00 per Dilla track that they rhymed over towards Mom Dukes. Maybe if all those producers who are currently sporting Dilla's sound gave back. Maybe we wouldn't be having this conversation. Great work keep pushing the culture forward. Lord only knows how many fools are trying to hold it back.

Yo I am from the Bay so caca don't speak for all of us. We know good music and Dilla was one the best to ever do it, point blank period. I can understand not everyone likes everything and that is what makes us different. But have some class homie, this man did a lot for hip hop whether you like it or not. Even if you can't respect that, then respect the fact that you are speaking on the deceased. Even Keak got love for Dilla.
RIP Dilla and Nate Dogg get better soon homie. One Love! 23

I know I should probably just leave it alone, but this issue hits too close to home for me.. Kanyeugay... Understand that this is about supporting Dilla's mom.. The song is not trying to be Dilla or whatever you were saying, this is about using the power of the people to help mend a bad situation. It's also about paying respect, to a man who inspired millions whether or not they knew who the source of that inspiration was, and the mother who looked after him when no one knew he needed it. Flat out, Ma Dukes is a soldier and an exemplary human being, who is just as inspiring as the one she gave birth to, let's do what we can to support that.

what a mess..... I mean really what a mess, This j dilla, story for me has been one said mess, I will state it right now, and I say this as a artist myself. J dilla is flatout the best beatmaker I have ever heard his vision and way of thinking is on the level of madlib. I feel like I was cheated because for years Dilla was underground and I did not find out all of the music I've been listening to most of my life was dilla and music on the same level as dilla, I don't know what is going on with all this drama about his estate and the ma dukes current events, and his brother Illa J makeing music but you know, I guess do what you do, if you say it's for dilla then you know..... do ya thing, but yo, someone's gotta say it.... "it ain't dilla"If dilla did not bless or touched it, it ain't dilla, kinda like the unfinished "Shineing"
I mean I hear your positive words and all and dude talking / rapping on the song but that ain't Dilla, I think if you want to do something for dilla you should do more fun raisers or something. J dilla is the balls of hip-hop, he is that dude who did not make bullshit or presented bullshit, he stayed in the lab trying to perfect something that could not be perfected, because as artist we never perfect, we only see more , and advance, Dilla would not just do a beat for you cause you was hot, he did it for the love.....so when you take hip-hop's balls away ..... well it kinda turns gay like that love lock song Kanye West just came out with. 26

All those that were disgusted with the news of Ma Dukes estrangement with the executors of the estate, here's our chance to really rep for her and spread the word as well as raise as much as we can to help her out. Also, share your well wishes and I will make sure she receives them as well..
Big ups to insound.com for hosting this and making sure that every last cent gets to Ms. Yancey directly.. This is truly the way to get money right in her pocket and avoid all the bullshit.. 35
