Fashion Friday: Grind London x Free Love, Erykah Badu x MET Gala 2014 + More Spring Looks

Fashion is always on the move but Friday is a good day to look back over the weeks events and see where we stand in the style runnings. Clearly the biggest fashion event this week was  Met Gala 2014. All the celebrities doubled down on style, attitude and glamour. A lot of beautiful looks--and some fashion failures--were present on the red carpet. However, we'd like to draw attention to one in particular: our own Erykah Badu was in full regal effect, representing her recent collaboration with Givenchy (and out hat-gaming Pharrell who has gotten much press for his massive Vivienne Westwood chapeau). Designer Riccardo Tisci chose Erykah to be the face of the campaign and stated: "She’s one of the most stylish women I’ve met in my life. She’s got such a good sense of proportion, of colors." For the Met Gala, she wore a gigantesque Givenchy's headpiece/hat with a beaded white sash around its base, matching her coat. In terms of sizing, she definitely set a  new headwear standard. Now, is Pharrell going to defect from Westwood to Givenchy? or maybe start a design collaboration with an other brand? or maybe he won't challenge the fashion icon. We, however, are taking our hats off to Badu.

US independent label, ONLY NY INC is dedicated to create classic, timeless designs in limited quantity. Deriving inspiration from NYC's underground street culture, they just released their Spring/Summer 14 lookbook, which have that vibrant feel of New York City. The pieces are the most casual street wear with the clear label's signature, which makes the garments cool easy-to-wear.

New York-based magazine Visionaire teamed up with GAP for a second installation to celebrate art and fashion one more time. They created a limited edition tee-shirt that changes from black and white to color in daylight, using UV-sensitive inks, embroidery, foils, screen-printing and full coverage photographic printing.  Alex Katz, Yoko Ono, Richard Phillips, Ugo Rondinone, Peter Lindbergh, Francois Berthoud and Roe Ethridge are the creatives who build some artwork while Mario Sorrenti, Marc Quinn and Tony Oursler focused on photographic printing. The result is definitely a success and they will launch on May 9th with a limited number of 500 tee-shirts for each artwork. Available in key global Gap Flagship stores, select Visionaire retailers, OpeningCeremony.us, Gap Boxpark in London, Gap White Space in Tokyo and Gap White Space in New York.

Vans is constantly reinventing itself with many collaborations and inspirations. This time around, they decided to feature artwork from the original Star Wars trilogy. It is an interesting idea and the sneakers came out looking right, bright and colorful, and at the same time referencing recognizable characters from the saga. Definitely a good catch, they will only release 300 pairs of each products at 6 stores worldwide.

Still on the Spring/ Summer 14 new collection, Grind London unveiled their new lookbook as well, entitled Classic Summer Cuts. Captured by Mehdi Lacoste, it features--among other classic looks--a tee simply titled Free Love Movement, coupled (so to speak) with a Fritz The Cat-style frame graphically illustrating the concept of free love in imaginative detail. Can't think of a better theme for springtime--not to mention a summer of love--than that.
