The Abstract

Q-Tip

Modern hip-hop and R&B music can both arguably be divided into pre- and post-A Tribe Called Quest, and the musical efforts of its lead MC and producer Kamaal Ibn John Fareed-better known to the world as Q-Tip. Consider the jazzy sampling, laid-back tempos and boho-chic vibe he introduced, then mull over the bohemian posturing and sounds of the neo-soul movement, plus any rap music that shies away from hardcore posturing. All roads lead back to ATCQ and the beats, rhymes and life of one man: Q-Tip. And now the time is ripe for The Renaissance, the Abstract MC's first solo album in nine years. Read more...

Kool Keith

Lost Masters Volume 2
(Dmaft Records : 2005)
Posted on 09/19/2005

"Neon lights shine, glow in the dark… urination!"

Why, Kool Keith, why?! As he gets older and more purposely bizarre, the less "cool" he becomes. All of his records in the aftermath of his banning from Columbia Records after the Black Elvis album flopped have sounded like a guy making a mockery of a once great version of himself. At times, he doesn't even seem to be trying. He doesn't rhyme, or even flow on beat most of the time; just randomly blurts out offensive words or phrases like the ultimate mad rapper, complete with Tourette's Syndrome.

But what about this new record? Well, it's yet another hour of keyboard beats and nonsensical lyrics to add to that pile. Most of the songs end up sounding the same (boring) and ending up at the same place (nowhere). In other words, it's business as usual.

Highlights and low points are either irrelevant or non-existent (I'm going to be honest with you here and say that I can't really tell what's what). If you already know you're a fan of Kool Keith's chicanery, you should probably be into this. For the rest of us, the liner notes are much more amusing than the actual music. Amongst a flurry of ridiculous shout outs (which include Project Pat, Cash Money, white folks, Phil Collins, Iron Maiden and the B-52's), you get a list of his top 10 producers (of which he has shockingly named himself number one) and a reference to the Dave Chappelle "I'm Rick James, bitch!" joke. Fascinating.
