The Foreign Exchange

Leave It All Behind
(Hard Boiled : 2008)
Posted on 10/29/2008
Chemistry is an elusive phenomenon. It’s what ignites white hot romantic sparks between two otherwise nondescript individuals. It’s also what marks certain rarified creative collaborations as truly magical. In both cases, chemistry elevates the whole above the sum of the parts. Fittingly enough, it is chemistry that propels the sophomore release from The Foreign Exchange, both conceptually and sonically, culminating in one of the more rewarding listening experiences of the year.

Leave It All Behind is the rare concept album that doesn’t feel forced. Like the relationship that is chronicled throughout, the album ebbs and flows in the key of life. “Daykeeper” is an understated opener, a quiet celebration of mutual love and dependancy driven by atmospheric keys and ethereal background vocals. As Phonte and Muhsinah trade plaintive vocals of laying together, watching over one another, the song takes on an almost voyeuristic quality, like we shouldn’t be sharing such an intimate moment with the two lovers. The song sets the tone perfectly, establishing not only the chemistry between lyrics, vocals and production, but also within the romantic narrative that drives the album. The perfect counterpoint to “Day Keeper” is “House of Cards”. Over a drum and bass groove and urgent keys, ‘Te and Muhsinah again trade mirroring verses, but this time the words are filled with distrust and deception. It is precisely such nuances in which the beauty of LIAB lies. This isn’t an album about falling in love, nor it’s demise. It’s about all of the ups and downs and detours along the way. The fickle way of the romantic pendulum is best exemplified at the project’s mid point, when he jazzy jubilance of “Sweeter Than You” transitions into the remorseful melancholy of “Valediction” so seamlessly that before the listener even realizes the former has given way to the latter, sweet has apparently gone sour.

Fans of 2004’s Connected know that the creative chemistry between Phonte and Nicolay is irrepressible. That hasn’t changed, even as the focus has shifted from razor sharp rhymes to soulful vocals. Yet, this time it’s the supporting cast that elevates LIAB from good to great. As a singer, the surprisingly engaging Phonte suffers at times from a lack of refinement and dexterity, but gets by with a little help from his friends. Long time collaborator Darien Brockington adds vocal polish to several tracks, as does Victor St. Clair, allowing ‘Te’s emotive earnestness to shine without having to carry the record. Even more integral to the project is the juxtaposition of female voices, provided throughout by Muhsinah and Yahzarah. Their easy rapport with ‘Te and ‘Lay not only underscores the motif of chemistry, but also prevents the romantic ruminations from becoming a one sided affair. The synergy between all of these perfectly placed pieces reaches it’s apex on the album’s penultimate track “Something to Behold,” with ‘Te, Muhsinah and Brockington celebrating the triumph of love (and chicken wings), over Nicolay’s propulsive drums and airy keys.

Given the up and down nature of the album’s narrative, and its somber black and white cover art, listeners could easily be forgiven for perusing the track list and pegging the closer, “Leave It All Behind” for a break up song. What unfolds instead is an unexpected, yet beautifully affirming culmination of everything that has preceded. Once the album’s final note has faded out, you’ll want to listen again, because in the presence of such impeccable chemistry, it’s hard to Leave It All Behind.

The album flows like water over a rock. Rubbing down notions of what it means to be hiphop... what it means to be downbeat... what it means to be true to oneself and put forth music front the soul. Monumental.

The anti-thesis to the hip-hop coonery that plagues our radio...

This album is an example of what one would see if they put a microscope to true hip-hop. Not speaking of typology, but the moreso the rawness this album is made of. It is genuine emotion, real life experience, great instrumentation, and vocals not dressed up to just sound good. This joint takes you on a journey, almost as if you're watching someone experience the ups and downs of being in a relationship.

I could played this album with my mom and grandfather in the room, and they were nodding their heads like hip hop veterans. At the same time, i had pillow talk with my girl to it. I don't care what no one says, you can't do any of that to none of the stuff out now (no disrespect).

I can't hate if you ain't like the album, though. You just weren't ready. Check it out again in a few years, when Bow Wow hits 30, and still needs T.I. to write his rhymes. You'll see...

Man.. for those of you who don't like this album, go see them perform it live in concert then come back and talk to me. No words can describe the experience I had last night at the show in DC. Nicolay, Yahzarah, Muhsinah, Phonte, Zoh!, Biscuit, etc., so real. Mixing tracks live from connected and leave it all behind, I'll always remember that joint, and ya'll haters would have too.

I'm a firm believer that a beautiful voice need not be a flawless one. The most important thing to me is that the music can evoke and communicate emotion in an authentic way. The Foreign Exchange did that on this album. It is a 91 at the very least.

This album is not intended for the Phontigga/Tiggalo(the emcee) fans. It is an amazing project created by Phonte Coleman(the artist) and Nicolay. Real music lovers should understand that it doesn't take a great singer to make a great album(i.e. John Legend's "Get Lifted") it takes great production, lyrical substance and relevance, and great chemistry btwn the artist, producer and writers. And thats exactly what LIAB is!! Amazing album Te and Nic!

This album is not for people who suffer from what I call "Chronic Hip-hop itis".

Symptoms include needing to hear beats knocking and dudes spitting at all times, no matter the time, place or mood.

LIAB isn't Connected 2 and by the time I heard Muhsinah's vocals come in on Daykeepr, I didn't need it to be.

If you don't get what Tay, Nic were doing here, I feel sorry for you.

While not what i expected, I definitly am enjoying this album, as well as the instrumentals disc it came with. It has been placed in our "drinking wine with Brie and grapes" Mix as well as the baby-makin playlist.

I was REALLY looking forward to some more Raw Lifes, though......

For all those who are looking for a "Connected" Album....Sorry to say this is truly not it!

Here 'Te and Nic branched out to another level of their Chemistry together, somewhere many "Artist" wish they could understand. Its not about Singing or Flowing on a track, its about the taking Talent to another Level.....'Te is not the best singer, but he stepped into Maturity!

Nic's Tracks are more grow up then The first time around....And one thing is for sure, his Melodies Compliment 'Te and whomever blesses his tracks. People have to be more inventive, and here this album Truly expresses that in many ways......

Love it or Hate it........Youre "Connected" and Cant "Leave it all behind"

One of the Best albums of the Year........With Many more to come.....

"Music is Life, Music is Love, Music is You"

I don't get why people aren't as open minded, especially if you are a true little brother fan. I've seen Phonte live, the man can carry a tune and his lyrical genius is far from a short coming on this album. At first i was skeptical, I wanted another connected. But it's not another connected, it's on a whole different level and that's what they were going for. The blend of melody and harmony and soft vocals just pulls you in. Stop going "I wish he'd rap more" it's not a rap album, get over it. Criticizing foreign exchange's eclectic creativity, just shows how really commercial some of you are. You want an artist that's gonna make the same type of album everytime, go get Soulja boy's new joint, I heard Bow Wow is releasing some joint called New Jack City 2 soon, go cop that. As far as this classic goes... Leave it or Love it, bottomline...

The best album of the year!

Why?

1. You can highly relate to the lyrics, vocals and everything in between.

2. It proves the creativity of real musicians.

3. It's just pure music for mind and soul.

It's like you want to protect these guys from the big record labels so they can keep doing their thing!

Peace

I'm feeling this album strong. I can get with the singing cause it's a Froriegn Exchange album. Now if i got signing all over a Little Brother album i would be disapointed. But this proves that a natural artist can rock the mic no matter what. It's like your favorite Chef serving you something new, Not your regular but you enjoy it just the same

I liked the album, it was decent, yet it wasn’t an album about falling in love, and it didnt want to make u celebrate like the first album did, with Te and Nicolays chemistry plus other emcees that were involved in bringing the music to life, and making a colorful album..Like the editor said up above, it feels like a black and white album, hardships, and break up, which for some, might be hard to swallow...I give it 3 out of 5...Sweeter Than You, If This Is Love, are my tracks...and its great that we get the instros in the same package...Would still love to hear nic and te on another FE go around, next time round', on some Connected pt.2 iddish...This shoulda been a phonte solo r&b/love album...That woulda made more since, since this sounds kinda like a d brock lp...
