Yes, Jar-e’s sophomore album, Chicas Malas was given a Spanish name, but it is not, by any means, a Latin album. Actually, it’s difficult to decipher exactly what genre Jar-e’s Chicas Malas falls into, but maybe it doesn’t need to fall in anywhere. Whatever you or I decide on, Chicas Malas will roll on over to another genre just in time for the following track.

Jar-e’s Chicas Malas is a collection of 10 songs that blend various elements across genres. Some songs would easily fit into the lineup of your local soft rock station, while others feature country-sounding guitar rifts and dub-like rhythm. Throughout the album, simple, heartfelt lyrics complement smooth, relaxing vocal tones.

As a package, Chicas Malas is refreshing, with real instrumentation (as opposed to computer-generated beats) played by real musicians (as opposed to random dudes who’ve read the software manual). It could easily be the soundtrack for one of those artsy, independent films where the art matters more than the masses. Although a pleasant listen, unfortunately, there is nothing new, innovative, or ground-breaking going on here.
