GuShee
GuShee EP
Otnorot Records : 2011
GuShee is the future. Ok, maybe that’s a little audacious. Or is it? An adventurous, daring mash up of dubstep, hip-hop, and electronica all points north, GuShee’s debut 9-track offering exhibits the infinite possibilities at the far reaches of the galaxy of black music. As a duo, Toronto’s resident soundscape architect Pro-Ef and Red Bull Music Academy alumnus/ Brainfeeder affiliate/ DMV native Pursuit Grooves employ the blueprints of afro-futurism’s sonic capabilities – sans the ego trippin’ – with commendable results.
The warped n’ slinky funk joint “When I Think Of You…Sunshine” is an easy winner, boasting a space age bass line that would make Max Headroom break out into a Roger Rabbit. “Like Magic” is a more cerebral cut, tackling concepts of existentialism, metaphysics, and astral travel. Hints of trip-hop filter into the heady “Making Babies,” which manages to mesmerize without the use of a drum track.
With the blahs of pop culture reigning supreme, the EP’s conceptual basis may be light years beyond the comprehension of some. However, GuShee isn’t about to shift gears for everyone else to play catch up. Take them in doses, if you will. In fact, they warn of the dangers that arise when you “…stuff your face with nonsense matter” on the trippy “The Way Up.” This maiden voyage of the GuShee mothership is an intriguing adventure. It brims with the promise of new horizons in sound architecture and collaboration. Get on board…if you dare.
