Musiq Soulchild

Onmyradio
(Atlantic : 2008)
Posted on 12/15/2008
Raise your hand if you had Musiq Soulchild as the last neo-soulster standing in the coffee house pool. Without the vocal chops of Bilal, the instrumental dexterity of D’Angelo, or the conceptual vision of Maxwell, the stocky cat from Philly with the lazy eye carved out a stable niche by living within his means. Unburdened by the grandiose aspirations and expectations that crippled his more virtuosic peers, Musiq harnessed hummable melodies, soaring hooks and plain spoken sentimentality to keep a catchy tune on the radio for the better part of decade. His fifth offering promises to extend the string.

Onmyradio opens with a contrivance, the unnecessarily Auto-tuned “Backagain,” and ends in a train wreck with the ‘when keepin’ it crunk goes wrong’ title cut. But in between the incongruous bookends, Musiq hangs in his comfort zone and delivers the most consistent album since his debut. Like his past releases, Onmyradio is buoyed by a pair of obvious standouts that will eventually land on what will be a very stellar greatest hits disc. This time the honors go to “Until,” a hook-heavy mid-tempo burner that will keep the steppers on the floor through the last drop of holiday eggnog, and the lush, falsetto driven “Sobeautiful,” a soon to be Quiet Storm staple. Less characteristically, the album also contains a few stylistic deviations that pay dividends. The feel good vibes of the island inflected “Iwannabe,” featuring a jubilant Damian Marley are rewind worthy, while “Moneyright” a dynamic, 808 driven pop confection provides a welcome respite from the album’s primarily slow to mid-tempo grooves.

Musiq’s albums have never been quite bold or distinct enough to achieve timelessness, but they always seem to hit right on time. As hostile weather dictates more nights in, accessibly romantic R&B is a must in any CD changer, and Onmyradio packs more then enough heat to keep yours percolating.

no musiq album ever failed me. if he is feeling the crunk and trill deal...shit, let him do it. i know, it's probably just an attempt to sell more records, but he at least puts out albums that are worth listening to. anthony hamilton's nu album and musiq's are my personal favs.
i don't know about the nu common shit, though. i saw his live show, before i listened to the album, and it screwed everything up already. bar conversations with ladies as a theme. git the fuck outta here. he fucked it up good for me...
saadiq and the way he feels makes me feel good too...shiat. he really understands how to create a good record. it is great to see that he got the talent to produce songs that sound like they are made 30 years ago. saadiq's keen understanding of musicianship and songwriting truly reflect in that album. to make it even more surreal, he invited some of the funk brothers to add some rhythm flow to his album.
salaam

There are very few artist that I would cop without reading a review, listening to an advanced copy etc. Musiq is one of them. Consistant to a falt and produces a classic with every album drop. Love the new album a certfied banger.

Yo for real man...
Amel Larrieux - Lovely Standards, Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It

THAT'S where an artist is expanding artistic abilities. Producing a different work of art from what you normally do, outside of the genre and learning a new craft to do it.

These other cats...no. Sorry. No.

i havent heard the new musiq album so i cant speak on that (i def will cop that shit soon). I just wanna say that music now a days does suck. Its kind of amazin if you think about artists from the 60's and 70's, be it rock or jazz, or soul, or r&b. think about how ill that music was, how great the vocalists were and how great the actuall music was. Now flash forward to 2000 thru 2008. I know music cant always be great, but why is this shit so bad. And whats worse is nobody cares. Everybody keeps listening cuz thats all there is and "thats what stuff sounds like now." And its almost like as soon as an artist does something wierd or bad, everyone hops on their dick and says "WAIT - dont be a hater - their just experimenting and expresing their artistic creativity." YO FUCK THAT. If your really tring to be different and craetive, why dont you stop using fuckin computer made beats and get back to instruments.
Im sure musiq's new album is good, and im damn sure its better than most the other shit out (fuck beyonce and mariah - 2 ladies with talent who blow it out the ass), but compare that to a classic soul album from the 60's or 70's. maybe im wrong - i dont know...i really just dont like music now adays (thats fucked up- im 22 and sound like an old bitter man.)

Oh, and I take back what I said about Kanye...I still think he's BUGGING, but this last album grew on me. Especially when I really listened to "Pinocchio's story" at the end...oh man...the way he compared his occasional wish to have a normal life to "being a real boy"?! Wow...and how he subtly said maybe his mom's death was his fault cause he introduced her to LA and the american dream, which in a roundabout way maybe got her trying to floss too much and get unnecessary cosmetic surgery? Powerful stuff, man...and all off the dome live at a show?! After that, I was like ok...Kanye may be bugging, but this is an interesting concept album.

But freakin COMMON was ridiculous. I wanna break that CD in half

OHMYGOD People....stop with the "let him expand as an artist" CRAP...you know that's some ol' BULL $%#*...every time someone in R&B music comes out with an album that "pushes the boundaries" nowadays, all they're REALLY doing is trying to get more radio play. And they do that by sounding more like what you're hearing from the OTHER radio-friendly artists, who are already trying to sound like each other. What boundaries are being pushed here? The boundary that kept him from being lumped in with the 25-and under singers on the radio now? Yeah, way to "expand your musical capabilities". That's the wackest response, and I keep hearing it over and over. Oh, Common's "expanding musically"...oh, Musiq made OnMyRadio sound like SouljaBoy co-wrote it because he's "expanding musically". I know I sound mad angry right now but dayum...tell me that's not foolish

OnMyRadio mixes what Musiq fans are used to with tracks that let him explore who he is as an entertainer. I love the album! I have a copy for the car one on itunes and one for the office!

Uhh "ONMYRADIO" is what that is....I have no idea why people is giving him such a hard time...but the cd is fire too me personally I can't stop listening to it...it's up there with his debut "Aijuswanaseing" & "Juslisen"! I like the change that he did with this album! No one should try to make him stay in a box...Let him be an artist and explore different avenues/styles of Music!!!

Music is not dying these days! R&B/Soul and Hip-hop have been amazing this year! Al Green, Dwele, Raphael Saadiq, Solange, the Foreign Exchange, Q-Tip, The Roots, and Kanye West have all had amazing albums! I think Heartbreak and 808s is Kanye West's best album by far! OnMyRadio seems more interesting than Musiq's last album which features several great songs, but some uninteresting filler too. This album seems more unique and less filler.

Music is dying these days...

Common?
Musiq?
Kanye?

Usually solid albums...but they all gotta make their labels happy somehow.

When was the last time those 3 cats, back to back to back, made me say "Meh..."? Not good...

Thank goodness for Foreign Exchange!!

probably my least favorite of all the musiq albums.
i'd mark it in the 7 range as well.

hopefully it needs a few more listens to completely grow,
otherwise i'll be anxiously awaiting a better effort.
