Video: Six Degrees of The Roots w/ Corey Townes

Questlove knows everybody, it seems, as we’re discovering through this Six Degrees of The Roots series that Philly360 is doing. Specifically, it turns out, he played drums with your dad. At least he did if you are Corey Townes, proprietor of hipster boutique Babylon Cartel and your dad is Jazzy Jeff. (Coming soon: Six.Degrees. Of. Jazzy. Jeff.)

Video: Six Degrees of The Roots w/ Kenny Gamble

The Roots, you may have noticed, are not just all over OKP–they are literally EVERYWHERE these days. In recognition of the fact that the legendary 215 crew are like the musical Goldmann-Sachs, the hometown team at Philly360 have set about documenting the many-tentacled Roots empire in a series they call Six Degrees of The Roots. The first subject under the microscope (above) is pioneering Philly soul producer/songwriter Kenny Gamble of Gamble & Huff fame (you heard of ‘em), who speaks about his early admiration for Questlove‘s pops Lee Andrews. But stay tuned for many more episodes as we bring home the Kevin Bacon in this ongoing series.

Video: John Legend “How I Got Over” Live at Calvary Baptist Church, Philly

Us bloggers be using the phrase “take ‘em to church” a lot, to describe anything from Jennifer Hudson doing gospel on late night to a vaguely soulful bridge on an r&b burner. But John Legend has officially called us out on our internet hyperbole by actually, factually taking it to a physical church –specifically Calvary Baptist in West Philly– for this um, spirited tribute to Aretha Franklin “How I Got Over.” (Here’s how). Catch him performing on tour with Sade any day now.
