Video: Nikki Jean Talks About Philly & Baking Cookies

Ever since Nikki Jean blew up our world with this stellar debut (and this stellar late night performance), we have found ourselves rewinding to the times before she had a record deal and was just our (incredibly-talented) OKP homegirl–and then fast-forwarding to watch her blossom on the big stage. One of our favorite mementos is this webisode from the homies at Philly360, who walked Nikki around town to talk about her motivation in making music–and identify her favorite Philly eating spots. Incidentally she also puts her wife-ability quotient off the statistical chart by offering to bake us all cookies. Mmm. Cookies.

Video: Questlove Introduces the Cheesesteak Sushi Roll

You already knew Questlove was a Renaissance man–drummer, impresario, style icon, etc. etc. But the hood knows you haven’t really established yourself as a brand until you can put your name on a signature sushi roll. In this case, Questo stopped by Philadelphia sushi spot Zama to roll up the Philly-cheesesteak flavored roll that will bear his name. Looks tasty, too, thought I’m assuming this one is just for demonstration purposes cause he is definitely not wearing a hairnet. Watch and get the full recipe over at Philly360.

Video: Questo, Eddie Levert & Shawn Stockman (Boyz II Men) in the Studio

If you’re like us, you may have been in Philly on the 4th of July, losing your mind on Ben Franklin Parkway. But if you’re like Philly insider Laiya St. Clair (find out how she’s connected to The Roots here) you were behind the scenes, losing your mind to the rehearsals and preparations that went in to the massive Independence Day jam. Watch this clip of Questlove, James Poyser and Captain Kirk rehearsing in the studio with Eddie Levert and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men.

Video: Six Degrees of The Roots w/ Laiya St. Clair

One minute Laiya St. Clair is just a kid standing in line to meet Stevie Wonder next to a young Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson…and the next she is an influential radio personality beating the president of Def Jam in the head about how his handling of The Roots album projects. Moral: be careful what you say to the sister ahead of you next time you’re in line to meet a celebrity. What goes around comes around and likewise this episode brings us full circle (360 degrees!) on our Six Degrees of the Roots series with Philly360 –but make sure you check all the installments in the series and find out how you’re connected right here.

Video: Six Degrees of The Roots w/ Dameadelphia

In Philadelphia, all roads lead to South Street  and all music industry war stories lead to The Roots. Philly Music Magazine founder Dameadelphia is no exception; at 17 he was just a young buck trying to hold the mic at a South Street Roots jam session–and look at him now. Of course it doesn’t hurt if your high school rap crew includes a neighbor of Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter on it’s roster. Watch the video above to get the full story and go here to find out how you’re connected.
