Okayplayer and Mel D. Cole were on hand for last night’s sold-out concert at SOB’s. Wale and the UCB band were the headliners and it was considered Blu & Exile’s first full show in NYC. Skillz came through for a guest slot and was joined by DJ Jazzy Jeff on the 1s and 2s. Kweli popped on stage to perform his verse on the new Skillz single “So Far So Good.” The highlight for us was definitely a chance to finally catch the Cali based Blu & Exile. Blu had the crowd in the palm of his hand and Exile’s mpc solo had heads blown. Check out the photo gallery from VillageSlum after the click and stay tuned for imminent youtubery, especially of that Exile solo.

Last Thursaday the legendary Reflection Eternal reunited in the basement of New York City’s Club Rehab (formerly Club Midway) located in the Alphabet City section of the East Village/LES. It was episode VII of Kweli’s (aka Talibra) “In The Mood” party series with resident DJs Kweli, Eque, She-Rock, and special guest DJ Twilite Tone and hosted by Dedan (shout out to the ICU). The vibe was loose and hip-hop was very much alive as the intimate crowd was transported back to 2000 with renditions of songs “Too Late,” “The Blast,” Move Something,” and “Round & Round” off their classic Train Of Thought (Rawkus Records) album. They also peformed bangers off Tek’s Hi-Teknology series including “Where It Started At (NY)” and “Where I’m From.” Per usual, OKP Mel D. Cole was on deck snapping photos of the show and crowd. Check ‘em out!

If you know okayplayer, you know we love all the arts. Especially photography. Over the years we have hosted our regular Okayplayer Photographer month (we hope to bring it back this year!) as well as featured the best photographs of the artists we love on our home page and blogs. One of our running favorites is NYC’s own, Mike Schreiber. Mike makes it easy for us, having taken some of the dopest flicks you will ever see of: Mos Def, Nas, Common, M.I.A., John Legend, Dwele, The Jazzyfatnastees, Young Buck, Biz Markie, Alice Smith, Jim Jones, Keith Murray, Vernon Reid, and that’s just some of the music stuff!

Oh yes, you know how we do. We’ve got plenty of Roots Picnic photo galleries on the way. Here is the first one consisting of backstage shots from VillageSlum and Okayplayer’s Mel D. Cole. Trevor Paulhus was on set shooting portraits all day long and the okayplayerTV cameras were rolling. Stay tuned for more post-Picnic coverage all week long. Click read-more to see the gallery.
