Photos: The Roots in Lubljana, Slovenia circa 1994

Our boy Indy just shot over these freshly scanned vintage photos from a 16 year old Roots show held in Slovenia taken by DJ Phat Phillie and we thought we would share them with y’all.  While The Roots continually push their artistic boundaries, it is easy to forget they’ve been around for 20 years now.  These photos depict a more stripped down version of the band around Do You Want More?!!!??! days featuring Brother ?uestion on drums, Black Thought on the mic, Kamal on the Fender Rhodes, Hub on Bass, and Rahzel the “Godfather of Noyze” on vocal percussion.  The band recently revisited this sound at the Blue Note in NYC earlier this week where ?uest, Black, and Rah freestyled a 20 minute set.  Post from that show coming right up!

Photo: Common, Del, Mos Def & More Backstage at Rock The Bells, SF

Our dude Trevor Traynor was backstage at Rock The Bells, San Francisco and (with Amanda Lopez on the lovely assist) shot an amazing series of portraits of the artists in attendance from Common to Sen Dog, from Blu to Masta Killa. 20 years from now somebody is going to dig these up somewhere and only then will we realize, Damn. 2011 was kind of a cool time to be alive. Check the photos below or in they’re natural habitat at T2′s blog I Shoot Everything.

Photo: OKAYSUMMER 2011 at The Palms

Okayplayer was part of the plot to blow up summer over the weekend (dayyum there was a lot going on this weekend), a conspiracy of partner channels Okayafrica and LargeUp that involved palms trees, building swimming pools on-site out of dumpsters and about 18 hours of steady partying. OKA put it like this:

Photo + Words: The Bodega Education Initiative at BHF 2011

Created with Admarket’s flickrSLiDR.

Although Q-Tip & Kanye grabbed headlines and blog-love, an essential part of the past week’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival was the an educational symposium that organizers Brooklyn Bodega put together at Pratt Institute here in Brooklyn. Luckily, our correspondents Rico aka Superbizzee and photographer Jayro were on hand to document the whole thing. Check the photo gallery (above) and read on for the full story.

The Roots and Rakim Perform “Paid In Full”

This past Wednesday June 22, as part of the annual Blue Note Jazz Festival, The Legendary Roots teamed up with the Legendary Rakim for a very special Paid in Full 25th Anniversary Edition celebration at NYC’s intimate Blue Note venue. With an early show and a late show, the band ran through the 10 track of the classic album with funky flawlessness. During the first show, Nelson George asked Rakim and Black Thought questions about the album’s legacy and Rakim’s career at the beginning and half way points. The second show featured questions from Toure, and both Dave Chappelle and Talib Kweli were in the house who had their turn posing questions as well. Very dope stuff indeed. Check out the excellent photo gallery from Mel D. Cole after the cut as well as a video interview with Rakim and Black Thought from MTV News.
