Wordsworth -
Mirror
Music
(Halftooth)
BUY NOW!
As
his name suggests, Brooklyn-bred
microphone fiend Wordsworth
is the epitome of a true Hip-Hop
wordsmith. At a time when the rap
market is flooded with cookie-cutter
sensations who churn out forgettable
pop hits rather than solid albums,
this Lyricist Lounge
All-Star is looking to the past
to reinvigorate the present by recalling
Hip-Hop’s golden age of 1994
— when the beats were hard
and emcees talked to listeners about
relevant topics they could relate
to. Not just about girls, clubs,
and the current brand name of choice,
Wordsworth raps about true life.
“It’s a reflection of
everything we go through as people,”
Wordsworth says of his debut solo
album, the aptly titled Mirror
Music.
Mirror
Music is refreshingly gritty —
smart and ripe with wisdom only
acquired through real life experiences.
The new album shows a growth in
Wordsworth’s patented swagger;
the wordsmith does more than just
brag on the new album – he
gives personal insight and spits
narratives that reflect everyday
life without glorifying street living.
Mirror Music appeals to anyone who
appreciates a true sure flow.
“Nothing good to say keep
silent/Cause the things that I wouldn’t
want to say you keep rhyming/Keep
firing, I seek like a missile heat
guided/And I’m so hot I’m
a be on top cause heat rises,”
Wordsworth rhymes on first single
“Gotta Pay,”
urging MCs that “Y’all
don’t need to dumb it down,
y’all dudes is dumb already.”
Throughout
his storied career, Wordsworth has
never dumbed it down. A college
graduate who wrote all his papers
in rhyme, Wordsworth first hit the
scene at the famed Lyricist
Lounge showcases, where
he and partner Punchline impressed
host Q-Tip so much
he invited them to spit on “Rock
Rock, Y’All,”
for A Tribe Called Quest’s
1998 album The Love
Movement. The duo
then went on to drop unforgettable
verses on Black Star’s
“Twice Inna Lifetime,”
eventually releasing their own album,
Punch ’N’
Words.
With
the underground long buzzing, the
world at large was introduced to
Wordsworth when he co-created, -scripted,
and -starred in MTV’s groundbreaking
sketch comedy series, The
Lyricist Lounge Show, in
2000. The show featured a mix of
scripted and improv sketches, most
memorably showcasing Wordsworth
and Mos Def freestyling
on a ledge, with Wordsworth rhyming
Mos Def out of jumping.
Over the years, Wordsworth has gained
solo notoriety by performing on
radio shows (including Stretch
Armstrong and Bobbito,
and Sway and Tech’s
Wake Up Show), frequenting
open mic venues, and appearing on
popular mixtapes that have circulated
worldwide. In addition to rhyming,
he continues to study acting, has
written a number of film scripts
and television treatments, and was
recently featured in the award-winning
independent film, Freestyle:
The Art of Rhyme.
The
Word on Wordsworth
“Always clever with the wordplay,
his talent shines from the start-off
cut…”
-The Source Magazine
"Wordsworth doesn't bother
with empty recitations of big questions;
instead, he plays to his strengths,
telling stories and drawing characters
you'll recognize no matter what
hood you're from...Rating: XL"
-XXL
"[Mirror Music] thumps with
street savvy beats and lucid 'hood
imagery..."
-VIBE
"...an impressive debut
from this well-rounded wordsmith."
-Complex
“Highly anticipated and
justifiably so, Wordsworth’s
debut solo album is a lyrical goldmine....this
MC captures the true essence of
hip-hop: the merger of talent and
truth.”
- Upscale Magazine
“…lean, bouncing
beats, funky samples, and killer
couplets from one of the city’s
best freestylers.”
- Time Out New York
“Wordsworth’s latest
is so good it’s almost hard
to describe…an indie hip-hop
classic.”
- Music Connection
“It’s been a long
time coming, but Mirror Music is
one of the better albums, independent
or mainstream, heard all year.”
- AllHipHop.com
“Wordsworth serves up dishes
of insight.”
- SOHH.com
"...Wordsworth is one of the
most talented emcees alive..."
- HipHopDx.com
