Vast
Aire -
Look
Mom...No Hands
(Chocolate
Industries)
**In
stores now - buy it here!!**
Vast Aire, remember
him? He's the titan MC who shocked
the world and conquered critics
as the leader of the landmark indie
hip hop crew, Cannibal Ox.
Their essential El-P engineered
2002 LP Cold Vein was a
chart-topper in every smart music
critic's year-end poll. While Ox
works on a new EP for the fall,
Vast is taking a break from his
role as chief Ox man to unleash
one of the year's strongest albums
with is debut solo effort Look
Mom...No Hands. Featuring a
wide range of guest mc's from MF
Doom & Aesop
Rock to hip hop veteran
Sadat X (Brand
Nubian) the album is stacked with
incredible moments. From the the
Digital Underground-esque jeep juice
of "Pegasus" to the soul-driven
love joint "Could You Be?"
to the Parliament-club funk of "Elixir,"
Vast keeps us guessing. He battles
verbal enemies with "When Michael
Smacks Lucifer" and demolishes
all doubters with the crackling
head-nod anthem "Candid Cam."
The rest of Look Mom... No Hands
is just as hot. Knee-deep in production
from legends-in-the-making such
as RJD2, Ayatollah, Da Beatminerz,
CamuTao and the elusive
Californian beat-scientist &
MC Madlib (Quasimoto,
Yesterday's New Quintet, Busta Rhymes)
who provides his blunted blue-funk
assault for three of the albums
many highlights. The work documented
between Vast & Madlib is a milestone
collaboration in the careers of
two blossoming hip hop prodigies
blending two coasts like "Cali-weed
to New York, its like African Snow..."
Vast is an Uptown representative
who has been making noise in the
NYC underground since 1995. He's
put in work, and now his signature
voice and incredible delivery is
unmistakable in the rap game. He's
learned to harness his poetic street
flow, informed by his passion for
Aikido martial arts, and craft memorable
songs. Already larger than life
in physical form, with the release
of Look Mom... No Hands,
Vast's finally able to make moves
with no boundaries. It's timeless
stuff that is as original as it
is hardcore, mapping the journey
of a true hip hop artist set free.

Bound by a love
of music and a drive to produce sophisticated, spiritually
minded hip hop, The Procussions are a group of emcee-musicians
who hail from Colorado. The name “Procussion”
is a hybrid of two main elements: "Pro,"
which can either stand for professional or positive,
and "cussion" (taken from the word percussion),
which means to impress a sound upon the ear. When
fused together, the two elements create the definition
of this musical movement.

Calvin
Richardson -
2:35 pM
(Hollywood
Records)
You put the
CD into your player and from the opening bars of ”Keep
On Pushin’” you might think that you had
found a great Sam Cooke or Bobby Womack album, one
of those wonderful records from the ‘60s or
‘70s that your folks played all weekend long,
back in the day. It’s understandable that you
might consider that the singer you’re hearing
is - at the very least - a contemporary of those legendary
R&B pioneers: he has that same honesty, the same
sanctified sound, the realness that made Cooke, Womack
and others like Donny Hathaway and Marvin Gaye such
revered figures in popular music.

Robert
Randolph & the Family Band -
Unclassified
(Warner
BrothersRecords)
There's an energy in these tracks that's unlike anything
on the charts today -- positive and inclusive, in
the fashion of Stevie Wonder, Al Green or Sly and
the Family Stone. It's about celebration, not about
preaching; the handclap grooves, the words that welcome
everyone, the whirl of dance and sweat and song and,
always, the steel guitar, riding above it all, improbable
yet the perfect voice to bring this message home.
