With
lyrics like shards of a broken mirror,
North Carolina representative, Supastition’s
latest effort, The Deadline,
cuts deep — and is bound to
leave a few scars. In an industry
where gimmicks supersede talent
and substance, Supastition remains
faithful to the craft, the fans,
and the culture — a true emcee’s
emcee.
The record marks Supastition’s
first official release since his
acclaimed 2002 debut, 7 Years
of Bad Luck (Freshchest).
For The Deadline, Supa enlists
the talents of some of Beat Society.com’s
finest beat makers: a roster spanning
from Europe to Australia, and back
home. It was this type of trans-continental
co-op that spawned The Williams,
a collaboration between Supa and
Netherland’s Nicolay
(The Foreign Exchange) which
was selected from over 10,000 entries
to be included on Okayplayer's
True Notes Vol. 1 compilation
earlier this year.
Ten
tracks deep, The Deadline
is a flawless endeavor intended
to take listeners back to the days
of hip hop without compromise —
clever wordplay and masterful delivery
wrapped tightly in custom-fitted
production. Whether it be the concept-driven
"Fountain of Youth", or
the battle-tested "Adrenaline",
Supastition’s verses on The
Deadline resonate with honesty
and introspection — a testament
to the emcee’s resilience
and maturity. Hoping to discourage
listeners from pigeonholing him,
Supa lets it be known on the Illmind-produced
lead single "Boombox"
that "I’m not crunk,
I’m not backpack or abstract.
I’m Hip Hop in its purest
form, player, that’s that."
As The Deadline arrives on
November 2nd, Supa is already gearing
up for the release of his long-awaited
full length, Chain Letters
— in stores early 2005. Featuring
production by 9th Wonder,
Jake One, Nicolay,
M-Phazes, Illmind
and more, and a guest appearance
by Phonte and Big Pooh
of Little Brother, Chain
Letters promises to be nothing
short of an underground favorite.
