BIO
Slum Village
has been called a “liquid
association”. They are a group
where members and record labels
have come and gone as the group
evolves. Yet their rhythmic flow
remains the same. With an undercurrent
of classic lyrical ability and a
double portion of soul, Slum Village
remains an important fixture in
hip-hop’s musical landscape.
Maybe its because they are from
Detroit. They flow like the strong
current of the Detroit River, which
separates our city from Windsor
Ontario, Canada. Slum Village is
like that river; with a strong international
presence and are also a foundational
fixture in their hometown. They
are underground kings treasured
for their classic material and praised
for the way that their career has
matured.
This is the group that Q-Tip
of A Tribe
Called Quest passed the torch
to after his group’s demise
when he stated, “I’ma
put it in the hands of the Slum
now…” Shocking the music
industry and putting fans on notice,
Slum Village stepped in to the arena
with unique rhyme patterns and incomparable
beats. They have since lived up
to that high expectation by constantly
serving up albums that are critically
acclaimed.
Fantastic
Vol. 2 ushered in a
new era of “Neo-Rap”
with production by then-member,
Jay Dee A.K.A.
J. Dilla who left the group
to pursue what has become a legendary
production career. A dynamic judge
of talent, the group introduced
the world to Virgin Records artist,
Dwele
in 2002 on the album, Trinity.
The critically lauded album also
introduced new group member, Elzhi
who shone on the project and then
stood his ground alone with T3
on the album, Detroit
Deli: A Taste of Detroit
(2004).
Deli spawned the group’s most
commercially successful single to
date, “Selfish”; produced
by and featuring Kanye
West. Barely legal aged,
extremely talented beat smiths,
B.R. Gunna,
produced ten of the remaining tracks.
Black Milk
and Young
RJ return to the boards to
handle all production responsibilities
on the fifth Slum Village album,
which is self-titled.
Returning to record label independence,
Barak Records plans to extensively
promote the new album by releasing
three singles and videos the first
for the blazing hot single, “Ez
Up”. The fourteen-track album
will further solidify Slum Village’s
place in music history. While the
group changes, their rhythmic ebb
and flow remains constant, strong,
and timeless. |
