Danny Is Dead!
Shortly after the release of "Charm", one of 2006's most highly-praised rap albums, South Carolina rapper/producer Danny! puzzled the underground hip-hop community when he announced his "retirement" from music. Many respected his seemingly rash decision but wondered how someone receiving so much acclaim would want to walk away from it all. Fast-forward one year and two instrumental albums later and Danny!, now the newest member of the Definitive Jux family, has since recanted his claims of calling it quits, promising to return to the music scene to deliver his debut EP as a Def Jux artist.
While waiting patiently for contract negotiations to be finalized with Def Jux, Danny! decided to release one last project as an independent and unsigned artist. "Danny Is Dead", according to the producer/MC, is an EP with a running time of thirty minutes intended to serve as a prequel to his Definitive Jux project. Literally picking up where "Charm" left off, "Danny Is Dead" is eight tracks of back-to-back bangers: from the defiant "The World Is Yours", to the updated versions of "Charm"'s more memorable tracks, "Fly" and "Cafe Surreal", to the redux of A Tribe Called Quest's 1998 jam "Find A Way", revamped as "Check It Out".
Featuring sole production from Danny! himself and no guest appearances, "Danny Is Dead" gives listeners just enough new material to tide them over until his Def Jux album later on in the year. Until then, be sure to help keep Danny! "alive" by purchasing "Danny Is Dead", in stores now.
