Zoe Saldana in character on the set of Nina Simone biopic

Today we learned beyond any doubt that Zoe Saldana will be portraying Nina Simone in the forthcoming biopic on the groundbreaking singer –over the objections of her daughter Simone and in spite of petitions on change dot org–when Shadow & Act published 2 shots of the dominicana actress getting into character. These pics were snapped by a reader and were taken on the set of the film, which apparently began shooting in Paris two weeks back. Now, don’t lose your sh*t just yet, because as S&A points out:

We don’t know what stage of the make-up process she’s in here. So the final *look* after all the work is done (which may or may not include prosthetics), might be very different from what we see here.  So, I wouldn’t judge based solely on these pictures.

However, we can say that some heavy make-up and transformation of Zoe’s look will be involved. Some other details about the film have also emerged (or been confirmed) lately including: Mike Epps has joined the cast as original comic genius Richard Pryor and David Oyelowo will indeed be playing Nina’s Paris-based manager Clifton Henderson. Stay tuned as more details (and an official production still, which will clearly give us a much better idea of what to expect from Saldana as Simone) come to light.

Wait…so they’re essentially Black-facing a lighter complexioned artist to pull it off instead of just……getting an actress who actually has a similar completion? ::sighs:: Come on man.

god love zoe saldana but….it is weird. i am trying to suspend judgement. i mean Malcolm X was lightskinned and red-haired and denzel definitely knocked that out of the park in spite of their physical differences. he even used them to his advantage as an actor, letting the Malcolm X visual persona (beard, glasses, astrakhan etc) slowly emerge, transforming himself thru-out the film. i dont know if that can work in this case…i’m just trying not to pre-judge.

India Arie would have been the best choice possible. She sings, plays the piano, and the looks are simular.

georgia anne muldrow would be the best…even though I love zoe…and Georgia is not really known

This is just damn dumb, and on so many levels offensive. She’s a good actress but out of respect she should have passed on this one. The screenplay is just as watered down as the casting.
