Willis Earl Beal teams with NOWNESS to present his short film Principles of a Protagonist - the animated narrative based upon his 2010 novella and 2012 EP of the same name. This film is the latest installment of their Shorts On Sundays series. The musical content of the EP serves as the score to the self-narrated film that Beal animated using the free-hand sketches that initially helped to launched his career. Visually stunning and endearing in their imperfection, Beal's drawings are colored by the vivid abstractions of his narrative and the intimacy of his emotionally vulnerable and conspicuously defiant sound. Having mastered the folk of solitude, he mines the depths of his own psyche within a dream sequence that resembles Richard Linklater's Waking Life in its allegiance to tranquility, hysteria and uncertainty through an exploration of the slightly surreal.
