Speaking of important days, this past weekend marked the death anniversary (November 13th) of Wu legend Ol’ Dirty Bastard, who passed in 2004 just two days short of his 36th birthday (November 15th). Last year his fellow monk the RZA unveiled this song “Gone” as a free download in tribute to his friend. This year, he marked ODB’s life/death anniversary week with the release of the video–watch and remember Big Baby Jesus in all his raw originality. As Dilla knew, he is still here and he knows the bus routes.

well that was crap-tackular
Man. I love RZA, I think he is a musical genius. That’s why I want to like this. And, the beat is actually pretty nice. I like that he’s using a live band like with Stone Mecca on Digi Snax, which was a dope album. The video puts out this image I just can’t get behind though, and the vocalist has the same problem. Production-wise this is crisp and clever, but you can’t just take RZA and transplant him into some teen emo-band and expect it. to work. It doesn’t feel like RZA belongs in this video at all.
right there with you… But the RZA has been missing that spark lyrically for a while. He was one of my favorite cats in the WU but he’s lost a step. Minus the rock band he just needs a return to the 36 to peak my interest again.
