Video Premiere: Akua Naru “Walking The Block” f/ Drea d’Nur

Akua Naru is back on the block. And in this “live & aflame” session backed the DigFlo band and singer Drea d’Nur, Akua shows the world why she is an okayplayer-to-watch, commanding the mic and weaving complex counterpoints to the live ensemble into the cadence of her rhyme like a Grammy-winning industry vet, rather than a fresh face in this whole live hip-hop movement. Watch for the sax solo and make sure you stick with this song right through to goose-bumpy conclusion at the 7 minute, 26 second mark. You’ll be glad you did. Also, did I forget to mention: World Premiere! The original version of “The Block” is available on Akua’s album The Journey Aflame from last year, purchase it on iTunes.

Beautiful! Powerful! Elegant! Relevant! You’ve effectively globalized what many mistakenly believe to be a local phenomenon. All I want to see now is you performing with a customized Mic, engraved with “Akua” wih flames round about the throne of it for that is the tool you use to burn away the illusions through poetry and prose. Next, I want to see your neck decorated when you perform…not so much necklaces though that may do, but more like ritual paint or something to that affect. Just the neck, because the words and the flow that finds it’s way through your throat should be announced and the paint will announce the arrive of the word made flesh. Peace and love Ku!

My goodness…this video gripped me like no other. Drea’s voice is captivating…powerful. I believe her spirit can heal…those words…the riffs…PHENOMENAL! The band KILLED! considering what is going on in america right now. that the trayvon martin case has brought the plight of black men to the national discussion…(not like this hasnt been a discussion for us for 400 yrs.) A song like this is so important right now, yesterday, tomorrow…and so on.. I am so grateful to Akua Naru for writing this story..and putting it in song. This is our anthem right now, until we receive justice for our people. The young lady who sung the chorus, Drea, has such a beautiful voice. Reminds me of Lauryn Hill somehow.
